Getting comfortable

Hi all !!

I have installed quite a few security IP camera systems over the last 10 years mostly for family and friends. Always used Vivotek cameras until now. I ordered in the new Vivotek 5mp camera to test before replacing all 10 of our home outdoor cameras (~$5k). Since I am a retired engineer/scientist (USAF for 32 years) I like understand technology before purchasing. Just for kicks I ordered in a $75 Hikvision knock off. Comparing the 2 side by side I got quite a surprise. Even without any adjustment on the knock and much time tweaking the Vivotek, the $79 knock off seemed better on the monitors, in the recorded video and in the still photos. (see image attached).

Well I settled in on a DS-2CD2142FWD-IS with a 4mm lens. Did not care much for 2.8mm curved video and since our home camera location were setup for Vivotek 75 deg camera angles figured the 4mm would be better.

Found this forum which had great info to get educated on before saving some serious bucks on cameras with the Hikvision cameras.

Take Care All !!

Hi. The value difference between some brands is really amazing. Just think of all the professional installers who don't know or care, and still go around installing thousands of dollars worth of overpriced stuff each week just because it is the brand they always used.

Have you ordered cams yet? Because those 4MP models are a couple years old and not very good at low light. And also not really the greatest price. For example http://a.co/2UOwgQx is roughly equivalent at just $50 USD each, and it isn't a knockoff, but just a low end Chinese imported model from a well-known quality brand.

I think you owe it to yourself to buy one of these Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z) or its brethren for comparison before you buy a lot of cameras.

Welcome M,

Definitely take a look at some of the comparisons and reviews members have been sharing here, I suspect you can reduce that planned expenditure some ( ~$5k budget ) and still get quality results.
