Do I need to upgrade NVR for ColorVu cameras ?

Hi all

I have a 10 year old NVR, model DS-7616NI-E2/8P and 8 x Hik cameras. Most of the cameras are DS-2CD2335-I.
NVR is on firmware V3.3.2 build 150522, and is the 'overseas version' from Aliexpress

I am wishing to upgrade the cameras, especially the front 2 cameras facing the road and driveway to the Hikvision ColourVu cameras.

Will the existing NVR let me have full functionality of the new cameras ?

Thanks

Howdy @geek7899 ...

I think you have a typo in the model number DS-7616NI-E2/8P... is that correct, or is the NVR model actually DS-7608NI-E2/8P or DS-7616NI-E2/16P maybe?

Depending on what specific ColorVu cameras you are intending to use, they may or may not work with your existing NVR. I think the "E" series is limited to 5MP cameras.

In general, the "E" series NVRs are not well suited for the newer Hikvision cameras... I started with an "E" series NVR 10 years ago but was never happy with it... I upgraded to an "I" series a few years later (with some ColorVu cameras) and was quite satisfied for a few years... once I had upgraded all 8 cameras, the "I" series was barely handling the load... I finally upgraded to an "M" series NVR 2 years ago and all is good.

It's mostly related to the NVR's incoming bandwidth capacity... for the 16P models, "E" series has 80Kbps, "I" series has 160Kbps, and "M" series has 256Kbps. Your older cameras will work with the newer NVRs, if you are only looking to upgrade the 2 cameras.

If you are getting new cameras, take to time to research here regarding choosing the right focal length cameras... a big mistake I made (that I'm stuck with) was getting all 2.8mm wide angle cameras. I'm not saying that those are not what you will want/need, just understand focal lengths before you buy any new cameras!

The NVR model is definately correct, I believe it can have upto 16 cameras connected, but only has 8 PoE built-in ports. I never got around to putting more than 8 cameras.

I initially intend to upgrade only the two front cameras, but eventually will upgrade them all to ColorVu with AcuSense, as money becomes available.

I have 2.8mm for front cameras , which gives me a wide view.

I also believe the E series are limited to 5MP.

I plan to go for 6 or 8MP so it appears old NVR may not work with the new cameras.

Any recommendations for Hikvision ColorVu cameras with AcuSense ?

I have seven DS-2CD2387G2-LU cameras... they are "almost" obsolete... last firmware update was Dec 2024 and I don't think there will be any further updates :(

The newest G3 ColorVu (hybrid, they also have IR) cameras look good but I have not tried them, and they are not available in the US market...

There is a very popular trusted seller here ( @EMPIRETECANDY , Andy) who has "Empire Tech rebranded" International English Hikvision G3 ColorVu cameras... If I were going to upgrade any of mine, this is the model I would choose:

T2387G3-SL 1/1.8"CMOS 8MP Smart Hybrid Light with ColorVu Fixed Turret Network Camera, DS-2CD2387G3-LI(2U)Y
