I think, none of the manufacturers can be trusted to the full extend. Hikvision also has a record of being not that secure. Many of the Chinese manufacturers are financed by the government, despite the fact that Dahua says that they are not. Who will believe them or the other big fish in the camera market in the end. I bet that even Axis has a record, that on the other hand, will not be released that much on the interwebs as the Chinese brands.
Anyways, it is shocking to see what is going on
My system is completely isolated from the internet. Not by VPN, not by VLAN's, just no internet connection at the system itself. I don't need remote monitoring, but that is a personal preference

same applies to any so-called IoT device, few get any real support or updates when vulnerabilities are uncovered, especially once an updated model is released and being so cut-down when compared to PC tech, have limited capability for sophisticated defence or updatable AV. Even software like OpenSSL/VPN has had vulnerabilities in the past and no doubt others may crop up in the future. General consumers tho seem to leap into this stuff, connected fridges, alexa and the like, with no idea what security risks they're adding into their home networks and then manufacturers just abandon them at the roadside as they roll out the next "great" thing...

Indeed. When you buy a new *smart home* in the future, with all the cool IoT home devices connected to smart phones, refrigerators, door openers etc etc, you will get a second building with it, just to accommodate the NSA-enterprise-sized-cyber-security firewall center

Interesting. Ya know I'd love to by American made products, Not familiar with all the brands, are there any? Or say Axis which is based in Sweden, but at 4X+ the cost with less innovation and features at that "entry level" price it just doesnt make sense.
I know just enough IT to be dangerous admittedly, but I assume nowadays I'm responsible for my own security. Be it the Chinese Govt, hacker kiddies from Romania, or the NSA, none of them exactly have my best interests in mind.
Gotta run, my Samsung smart TV is turning itself off and on again and speaking to me in Mandarin...

tbh doesn't matter where a product is made, these days many are western designed but assembled in cheaper workforce regions to max the profit margins. Leads of course to copying and a secondary marketplace lol. Either way Yank/Brit/EU designed or made will be just as junk as anything else out there, same update cycles would be in play in regards to software fixes etc. Things are designed with a chipset and architecture at a point in time, so there may be limitations on how much updates can be done, but no doubt too an approach of why bother, not current product, punters can buy our latest and keep us in business...

Pretty soon we won't have to lift a finger to do anything; all we will do is eat and eat and eat and put on more pounds...all the while our phones will be chirping at us telling us it's time to do another...
