California is an Oil Energy Island.

It no longer produces enough oil, and does not have enough refining capacity to meet demand.
It must import oil and oil products.

There are no easy pipe routes to California from Texas, and the shipping distance from Texas through the Panama canal to California is long, so easier to ship from Asian to California.

California’s Oil Problem Is Bigger Than California | What's the Impact?

California's push to phase out fossil fuels has accelerated the closure of the refineries that still supply fuel to its military bases, airports, and 40 million drivers. If the plan is to move away from oil, what happens to everything that gets made from it before it ever reaches a gas pump?In this episode, Ronald Stein, author, columnist, and founder of PTS Advance, and Deborah Sivas, Luke W. Cole professor of Environmental Law at Stanford, examine what refinery closures actually mean for California's fuel supply and whether the transition plan accounts for all the oil produced beyond gasoline.

This video from California Insider explores the complex challenges facing California’s oil and gas infrastructure, focusing on the potential national security and economic impacts of refinery closures and aggressive environmental regulations.

Key Discussion Points:

  • The "Energy Island" Dilemma (1:27 - 1:53): Ronald Stein explains that because California is geologically and infrastructurally isolated (separated by the Sierra Mountains with no cross-mountain pipelines), the state is essentially an "energy island." It must refine its own fuel to maintain its status as the world's fourth-largest economy.
  • National Security Concerns (2:52 - 3:11): With 30 major military installations and nine international airports, the reduction of local refining capacity poses a significant national security risk. The state is increasingly forced to rely on imported finished products, potentially from foreign adversaries like China (2:58).
  • Refinery Closures and Supply (3:15 - 9:51): The experts discuss how stricter regulations from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are driving refineries to close or relocate to more business-friendly states (3:21 - 3:50). Because refining capacity is shrinking while demand remains steady, this supply-demand imbalance is cited as a primary driver for higher fuel prices (9:18 - 10:01).
  • The Role of Oil Beyond Gasoline (14:00 - 16:11): A central argument is that the "energy transition" focuses heavily on electricity while overlooking that nearly every modern convenience—including wind turbines, solar panels, and medical devices—is manufactured using petroleum derivatives (5:28 - 6:08).
  • The EV Transition and Grid Readiness (20:03 - 31:04): Professor Deborah Sivas notes that while California is moving toward a 2035 phase-out of internal combustion engines, the infrastructure, specifically charging networks and grid capacity, needs significant upgrades to meet the state's ambitious goals (23:38 - 25:28, 29:56 - 31:04).
  • Renewable Diesel and Plastic Production (35:14 - 37:58): The discussion touches on the shift toward "renewable diesel" made from agricultural products and the global pivot of the oil industry toward plastics manufacturing, noting that the demand for oil-based products will likely persist long after the transportation sector is electrified.

So maybe Venezuela ain't looking so bad after all...

Not just the Governor, almost every other high ranking official. The educational system that is teaching Marxism and DEI. They are able to twist the media to make the public think this is all Donald's fault. 10 second Instagram reels are the major influence on the California population.

So sad because it is a very beautiful piece of property/state. Weather is nice too... But so is Hawaii and look how the Liberals are destroying those Islands. They are a cancer to society...
