Hello all,

I haven't been able to see if this was discussed on another thread, but if it has just redirect me there. I have two Hikvision 2CD2732F-IS domes near my garage door. I would like to somehow set up a door sensor and display the status on the screen. Such as "garage open" "garage closed". I do not need any notifications besides the on screen display. Looking through the manual for these cameras has been of no assistance. Any ideas?

Quick and dirty proposal.

How about a microswitch on the garage door, wired to a low powered LED placed in the field of view of the camera?

@SquareEyes, not a bad proposal. My issue is that the cameras are mounted under the eve, which is in front of the garage. So they are pointing outward. I could install another camera at an angle which grabs the garage door, but figured the display would be a handy addition. With your proposal, I would lose part of my view. It is a good idea though, just not preferred in this situation.

Not necessarily. Depends where you place the LED.

Very cheap, quick and easy to implement.

Mirrors (like blind spot for cars) also work well.

Good point. Very good ideas. Thanks a lot for the responses!

Doesn't the 2732F-IS have alarm inputs & outputs?
Seems like you should be able to have the camera 'do something' based on an NO or NC contact.
not sure what that something might be, but check your cam's GUI and manual...
Or just try making contact across the alarm IN contacts and see if anything is displayed?

aha... check out this thread

I wouldn't waste my time on wild goose chases.

Unless someone knows how to display the status on screen, you will be wasting your time.

OK, did find this: http://www.cam-it.org/index.php?topic=7888.0

apparently one can update the cam's text overlay settings via curl. So if you can wire up you garage door sensor to something that can make such an http request, you'll see your garage door status reflected on the live camera view. nice to know...

Go to Home Despot and get a garage door indicator. I forget what they call them but I had one at my last house because someone (usually me) would sometimes forget to close the door. Inside, there was no indication that the door was open. The big problem was that there was a mandoor into the basement that gave access to the house. We had to turn off the beeper for when it was open for extended times and someone was inside but it had a blinking light to let us know in the bedroom if the door was open. That's no good if you want to check while you're away from home though.

For my money, a $30 IP camera in the garage on the back wall would give an extra camera AND show the door. The curl trick could be good but not necessarily better in a world with $30 IP cams.

An alarm system with door sensors would tell you from your smartphone if the door is open or closed plus alert you and the cops if someone broke in. Win win except for the monthly bill unless you rolled your own system.
