If it's not compatible, it should reject the firmware upload attempt. I see it's listed in hdsecuritystore.com as a DH-DVR7816S-U. Did you try calling them as well? Let us know if it accepts the HCVR7816S firmware, if it does the OP could add it to the support text. :3 -

The entire model listed on the barcode label on the bottom reads "DVR7816s-U"? If so it's coming up as obscure non-branded, which means you need to contact whatever entity you bought it from, as "oem" entities like to make up their own stupid model numbers while using original firmware that... -
