Get rid of your Ring, Arlo, Tapo, Blink (or other cloud cameras) and reclaim your privacy!

Ok, I thought I had read that before and that there was a threshold where it made more sense to include proper hardware.

Get rid of your Ring, Arlo, Tapo, Blink (or other cloud cameras) and reclaim your privacy!

I have had some friends ask about non-cloud solutions that do not require an NVR and have remote access. What are people using for SD card cameras and how is remote access achieved?

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

I think I got it. I turned off Anamorphic. It seems it did its thing after that.

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

I kept getting "ghost" alerts with no one in the capture. Apparently the girl across the street is too short to be in frame when ringing the doorbell... I've decided to try rotating the camera to corridor mode, but I can't get it to update in Blue Iris. It looks fine in the GUI. I had no issues...

I have not. I took the path of least resistance and effort.

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

I have a Unifi gateway, so I was able to use Teleport (Wireguard) through their Wifiman app. All I did was generate a link in the settings on my gateway, emailed that to my phone, then the app did the rest. I didn't need to set anything up, and there aren't really any settings in their app, just...

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

My daughter and her friends always tend to gather on the front porch, so I was constantly needing to snooze my Ring motion notifications when they're outside. This is why I went with the doorbell press, for now. I may look at adding motion later on when there's less little people running around...

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

I could have installed the Shelly in parallel, basically just using it as a sensor, but I thought it best to use its relay to set off the chime when the button is pressed.

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

Technically, yes. Pressing the doorbell button closes the contacts in the Shelly, causing the chime to go off. The Shelly itself does not trigger BI. Hubitat is monitoring the Shelly and when it sees its state change to ON, then the rule sends the HTTP trigger to BI for the snapshot. From there...

I decided to ditch Ring and made my dumb doorbell smart with Hubitat and Blue Iris

I know there are probably discussions about this all over, but I wanted to share my recent experience and what worked for me, in case anyone else is considering ditching their Ring, Arlo, Nest, etc doorbell. I have been wanting to get rid of my Ring doorbell for a while, but I just couldn't...

How do you help your neighbors with recommending and installing cameras?

I mention dash cams all the time, and the usual response is "I need to get one", but no one ever does. Next thing you know they get rear ended by a semi on the interstate. If people only knew how crappy all of the other solutions are, not to mention the security risks and them being able to...

How to trigger Blue Iris camera via external device - Anyone?

Old post, but it's what I am working on right now. I have two issues. If I fix one, the other breaks. If I fix that one, the other breaks. I am using http://BI-server-IP:BI-port/admin?camera=x&trigger=1&user=username&pw=password via Hubitat to trigger a camera when my doorbell is pressed. In...

How do you help your neighbors with recommending and installing cameras?

My neighbors have never really asked me, but I have had a couple friends and coworkers ask. I give them information and a shopping list, but they never follow through with it. One friend had his zero turn mower stolen. He asked about a system, I spec'd one out. As a short term solution he put up...

How do you help your neighbors with recommending and installing cameras?

Just keep my mouth shut when they are looking at Ring, Nest, Arlo, Blink, etc. No one wants to put in the time and effort for a much better system.

Yea, going to just use the 54IR above the door bell, triggered by the Shelly.

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

Huge strides were made, now I just need to get it all off the bench and installed. When the doorbell is pressed, the Shelly is triggered which also ding dongs the chime. Hubitat sees the trigger from the Shelly and then sends an HTTP command trigger to BI. Then, with that external trigger, BI...

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

I'm taking baby steps with it right now. I currently have my test Shelly working and sending my phone notifications through Hubitat regardless of whether I am on wifi. I have nothing set up in HA other than ESPHome, which was the only reason I set it up. I am building temperature controllers...

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

I completely agree. I don't think I have ever answered the doorbell through my phone. I'm looking into using a Shelly relay at my door chime to trigger my Hubitat and send a Pushover notification. If I can get it to include a snapshot from the 54IR above it, that would be even better.

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

Yea, the 54IR is going to stay there. I considered that route, as well. Go back to a dumb doorbell and come up with a way to receive triggers when someone pushes the doorbell. I previously had modified a Zwave door sensor and attached it to my doorbell chime. When the "door" would close, I...

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

I just set up Teleport and it was as easy as generating a link, emailing it to myself, and then clicking a couple buttons on my phone to accept. Would have taken longer, but I already had Wifiman installed on my phone. I disconnected from Wifi and tried connecting to the BI Web UI link on my...

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

Unfortunately when I switched to fiber I didn't know they use CGNAT, which kills my ability to use a VPN. I just need to call and order a static IP, I think it's $10 per month. I've been messing around with the doorbell in BI and narrowed down which trigger is for the button, so I think I can...

What about Pushover? Can I do anything with that? My guess is I wouldn't be able to use it for the button press, only motion alerts.

New Reolink Wired POE Doorbell Cam ?

Ok, I'll need to look into Home Assistant, then. I use Hubitat for all of my home automation, but do have a SFF PC running HA for programming some project ESP32s with ESPHome. I don't much care about Neighbors, there's never anything fun on there.
