    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

Boy, lots of updates here. Get ready for a bunch of random notes and posts Went ahead and ordered this block heater kit, I figure there is a good chance this gets used in another Houston snowpocalypse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07514DBMY?tag=smokstak09-20 Today I fixed up some wiring...

Today and yesterdays task, remove all the nonsense stickers. I really want to also remove the outlines of the stickers. The paint has oxidized where the stickers weren't, so I'll probably have to hit it with some compound or something (Not a paint person!) I need to repair that fender...

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

Part of me wants the THD meter, but part of me also just thinks plug stuff in, and if it works, it works! Tomorrow I will test with a line interactive UPS and see what it makes of it, if the UPS doesn't complain, I suspect everything else will be fine

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

I'm hoping the THD from this light tower is pretty good, I wish I had a meter! The guy I bought it from ran his AC and lights all through Beryl with no issue

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

I've not yet powered much from it, but the voltage regulation is not transformer based, but rather capacitor based which doesn't make for very stable voltage. There can be quite wide swings in the voltage, and by default the unloaded voltage is quite high around 134v per leg. I think the power...

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

Here was 6 days and 6 hours of outage for Hurricane Beryl. We were living life as normal, zero changes. So we can easily reduce things a little. The big 14kw peak was the main 4 ton AC, oven, and microwave going if I recall AS you can see, 6kw would have been fine. Ignore the things crossed...

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

After my last outage I learned that 6kw is actually plenty. Most of the time we were sitting well well below 6kw. The only things that spiked it over were using things like the Microwave and Air Fryer at the same time, oven, big AC (We also have mini splits) So, I could easily "get by" with...

    Emergency Power/Storms/Prepping etc

I have my big liquid cooled Generac, and I have some portable generators, but the portables are not very tough, and I don't really trust them to run for weeks on end. So I wanted a better backup to the backup generator, if that makes sense $1200 later, I found it! Its only 6kw output, but its...

Tips for a successful termination with RJ-45 connector

The long run is bulk cable, punched on both ends. Just a pre-made cable to connect the keystone jack to the device

    Ethernet Surge Protector OUTDOOR INSTALLS

Surge protectors are very low resistance, so when you get a surge the current wants to go there. The longer the wire run, the higher the resistance and the less effective the surge protector is. He probably wants to protect both the camera and the switch side This is why you want a surge...

    Ethernet Surge Protector OUTDOOR INSTALLS

Run a nice thick copper wire up from the Intersystem Bonding Connector of your house, make sure you don't add another ground rod or you could end up causing more damage that what you are trying to solve Make the wire as straight as possible with as few sharp bends as you can get away with...

Tips for a successful termination with RJ-45 connector

Good time saving tips I learned a while back 1. If you find yourself terminating ethernet, question why you're doing it 2. Buy punch down keystone jacks or surface mount blocks 3. Punch down cable in seconds with no hassle 4. Use pre-made patch cable to camera/device 5. ????????????? 6. Profit...

Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

Why are we splicing fiber at all? Termination is not splicing If you’ve never heard of professionals using pre-terminated fiber then you may not know many professionals Also, why do we care what “professionals” are doing? OP is installing a few cameras, not a mission critical undersea cable

Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

I don't mean to come off as rude, but what are you talking about, and how many hardened DoD facilities have you been to? This comment comes across like its from someone who has never worked with fiber before in their life. Running fiber is trivial and often times easier than copper as there are...

Moving around storage and removing a drive - best way to move clips?

I added a 22TB disk and need to remove a 12TB disk, as well as completely re-balancing all my cameras around the disks. I have things set pretty good now but now have a 12TB disk full of clips Should I just move them into the drives they should be in? I tried doing that and the database started...
