    Question about system setup

I have the dahua nvr5216-4ks2 and I have an 8 port Poe switch for my cameras. My main question is do I connect the NVR to the router directly and then the switch to the router directly? I've tried searching but that question still gets me. I wanna say that's how I do it but not 100% sure.

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Ahhh I didn't realize or fully understand when you connect to the VPN. Good to know. Another question then... Can you elaborate on what you mean by saying that any device (for me, my NVR) that is on my lan 100% of the time that I won't need to anything related to the VPN. Do you mean that I...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

If I set up a VPN on my home network (for the security system) does every electronic unit that wants access to my wifi in the house have to then sign into the VPN? Or can it be configured that only my NVR need to be signed in. Just thinking that it's gonna be a pain for multiple members in...

    Dahua NVR5216-4KS2

This is the non-Poe port version. For those who have and are using this model can you tell me how noisy this nvr is? What about the heat output? In pictures I don't see a fan on the back of the unit... is there a different fan in this model or none at all thus making this near silent?

    VPN Primer for Noobs

So I really want to get a VPN setup on my home network because I value security however after researching for a few hours I have learned that my current router (Linksys E4200 V2) does not support DD-WRT. This was a bummer to learn and has put me back at the starting line. I am now thinking...

    Camera for attic

I wouldn't do that. You'll get a lot of glare from the window and it will make your picture look like crap. Mount it outside.

    Dahua NVR5216-4KS2 / NVR5216-16P-4KS2

Thank you for the help. Honestly my brain is mush right now having researched ideas, builds, equipment, etc. My plan is to run at least 8 ip cams, recording 24/7, with remote viewing on iPhone. I would say I am 50/50 on buying the NVR5216-4KS2 with or without the Poe ports. Honestly don't...

I am looking at this same NVR for my home however I am having a hard time deciding if I need one with POE ports built in or one without them (I understand if I get one with them built in that I would need to get a POE Switch). I am not concerned about fan noise as the location of this will be...

Should I use a POE Switch or not?

Why are external switches more flexible and less limiting than internal poe switches? Amazon.com: BV-TECH 8 Port 120W 10/100Mbps Power over Ethernet Switch - Designed for IP Camera Use(Gray): Computers & Accessories Is this a good option for the 6 cams to connect to then the uplink port to the NVR?

Should I use a POE Switch or not?

That was my thinking too... Are the POE ports on the Dahua or Hikvision NVR's reliable? The cameras would then be wired directly into the NVR for power and transmission. Any recommendations on a basic 16 channel NVR? I am interested in the starlight turret cams and maybe 1 ptz cam.

So I am in the process of a new installation at my house. I will be adding 6 cameras to one side of my house and all cat5e cables will run up into the attic. Right now I am at a stalemate until I get some good advice on what to do. Do I run 6 separate cat5e cables up into my attic (about 100...

@fenderman I need to correct something I said above. I figure I am going to have 6 cameras in the area where my garage is. - I have heard that statement before about choosing Turrets over Bullet cams but still don't completely understand why? Is it just a better picture? - Why would I have issues if I used Powerlines? Right now the cams would receive power from the switch.
