HUGE RUMOR: Unifi Protect will support ONVIF cameras (like from HIK/Dahua)

The image transmitted from the Dahua cameras I have is inferior to what the optics and sensor are capable of. Easy to see by using ROI on a small area, which gets significantly clearer while the rest of the image turns to you-know-what.

    Why I hate phones...

Mine can sit "off" for a couple of weeks without the battery going down at all. I realize that's not proof that it's fully off. Just in case, one of my requirements is that any cell phone I have has an easily removable battery. This is getting harder and harder to find.

Earthquake off coast of Russia - Tsunami heading for Hawaii

Not if they were there measuring earthquakes in prehistoric times, when all the big volcanoes blew, when the mountains sprouted up, during the ice age, and other big-event time periods. Never say never ;)!

    Why I hate phones...

Same here. When I'm at home, the cell phone is off. Sometimes when I turn it on I pick up week-old text messages and/or voice mails. Many can't understand why I won't leave the tracking device on 24x7.

Unable to log in to one of my Dahua cameras via the Dahua NVR interface

It may very well be 24 channel. Here's one to see. https://www.dahuasecurity.com/asset/upload/product/20180824/DHI-NVR5424-24P-4KS2_Datasheet_20180824.pdf

Alert on simple contact closure. Any suggestions?

This is the one I might get someday because you can hang it on a POE port anywhere on the network. Another version with added relay outputs is a bit more $. I can't confirm that it works ok with BI, but everything I see sounds like it should. eI/O PoE Modbus TCP w/ 4 Isolated Inputs

All you're going to do is send it to Andy. Then the tariffs will create a budget surplus, you'll get a check from that, and send it all to Andy. Except maybe for some gator food.

SmartPSS Lite on a mac - trouble getting connected

smartPSS Lite runs pretty well under Wine on Linux. I wonder if it would work with Wine on MacOS? The M4 chip certainly makes it less likely, but something called Rosetta supposedly built into the mac lets it run x86 code. Just thinking out loud. It could work, or turn into a big time rathole.

    Low-cost label maker

If just numbers is ok, you can use the adhesive backed number labels from the electrical department at Home Depot, etc. For roll your own labels, Brother has at least a few low end models under $50.

I can't help thinking this post and another similar one busts the rules. "Businesses or individuals representing businesses are not allowed to post outgoing links, affiliate links or advertisements to their products / services or solicit members in any way whatsoever. This will be considered...

    Andy's NVR vs Blue Iris?

Since I've been comparing use of BI's UI3 to smartPSS, I don't want to accidentally leave the impression that they're similar technology-wise, because they are very different. At a high level, BI's native interface is similar to a monitor connected directly to the NVR. UI3 is the rough...

    Andy's NVR vs Blue Iris?

One last video attempting to show off how fast and easy it is to review and play trigger events on UI3. It's 89 seconds long and I readily admit somebody that knows what they're doing could have done a better job. I finally got the mechanical part down, using OBS studio. Another one of those...

    Trying SSD on BI

The suggestion is wrong. The BI storage folder (BI-new) is the only thing on the big SSD (the E drive), everything else is on C:. I'm just reporting what I see, and without knowing BI and UI3 internals I wouldn't hazard a guess as to why. I rarely run the UI on the BI machine, using UI3 on...

I have stage 4 metastatic lung cancer and as such pay attention to these reports. I've learned to take them with a grain of salt. My general conclusion is that there are cases where some unconventional treatment has worked or healing/remission has coincidentally occurred, then the story...

    Money & Economics

It's pretty obvious for anybody with brains that whatever is causing the rates to rise was baked into the system before Trump took office. Him shooting his mouth off too much makes for an easy target of TDSers. Every new home and business solar installation means fewer ratepayers paying for...

We have coyotes too, but it's the gophers in the vegetable garden that ruin my life. The bigger chicken threat by me is foxes. They easily jump the fences that coyotes either can't or don't.

    Trying SSD on BI

The 990PRO 4TB that I got was $299. There's a 990 EVO Plus for 40 or 50 bucks less, slightly slower, that from reading the specs I thought would be just as good but I chickened out in case there was more difference. Then there's the 9100 PRO that's a lot faster but over my cheapskate red line...

Agree with the first sentence. On the second one, maybe we need to meet someday at the OK corral to settle things. The article is about as solid as political polls and promises. And not a peep about No Tax on Social Security putting thousands into everybody's pockets ;)

    Trying SSD on BI

I'm trying an SSD as my storage drive on BI. I know it's advised against, so the forum in general has already told me it's a bad idea. This is one of those instances where I might end up learning from making a mistake. I replaced a 3TB WD purple drive with a 4TB Samsung 990PRO 2280 NVME SSD...

It's good to read articles like this for general awareness, but I'll claim this is an example of a BS bleeding heart article on ZH. IPC-Color4M-TL IVS birds and foxes detected as humas.

You need to say what you're installing it in. I don't do this often enough to give specific advice, but at the high level, I believe the answer is if it's an NVR just plug it in and go, and if it's BI you need to do some additional configuration work.
