The issue is though the firmware upgrade routine is good and does check to make sure appropriate for the camera. But because the firmware is modified so the camera thinks it's English/World region, things go awry and the routine then thinks the firmware is appropriate so the safety check falls... -

I agree with almost all your posts :) But in this case I think unless the seller indicated customers shouldn't upgrade at point of purchase then I wouldn't expect camera owners to know. Even if OP had read firmware update notes and glanced at Hikvision's websites etc it wouldn't be obvious... -

Where did you get it from? Certainly the aliexpress sellers I buy from put a clear Don't Upgrade Firmware! message on their pages - did your seller do that (wherever it was from)? If not then I agree with you that is very poor and misleading. Should give grounds to return it I would have... -

TFTP won't talk to some Hikvision cameras
Actually I think you can use Hikvision Tools to update firmware when the camera is in mini system mode - so no need for TFTP. OR of course use Hikvision TFTP program (if you can find it) -

2xx2 5.4.0 to 5.3.0 downgrader
This is unhacked English firmware (well, unhacked except for downgrade) - your camera is Chinese region so English firmware results in that message. TFTP Chinese 5.3.0 or look at the various hacking threads (others can help there) -

I assume you've not messed with mtd files etc right? If you ping -t 192.0.0.64 and plug in, how long until it restarts? Now had my firmware on version flag should be reset. What happens if you now TFTP Chinese 5.3.0 to it? -

Have a look at my 2xx2 downgrader post. It's for English cameras, but there's a good chance it could help. TFTP it to your camera and then let it reboot. If it was accepted (not sure) it will complain of language mismatch because your camera is Chinese, but it will reset the flag Brad C... -

EDIT: 10 Jan 2017 I've decided to remove this due to a problem someone experienced Unbricking DS-2CD2432F-IW help, no luck with 5.30 downgrader I can't be sure exactly what happened here, and despite reports of success from others I think it's better to be safe than sorry. I've no idea what... -

Based on what Brad_C originally posted I plan to put up a 2xx2 firmware that should put the camera back to 5.3.0 bypassing this problem. Should be up later today and full credit to him for finding this solution! -

Did you try TFTP? On same cameras that should work, on others it won't. Depends on the model and when it was made. -

In this case it's a restricted shell Hikvision use to try to prevent you from running whatever commands you like. This firmware just bypasses it by overwriting it on boot up so you don't encounter it and get a normal busybox shell instead. -

UART connection to recover Hik cameras
Are you using wireless on the camera for TFTP? You should use wired. When the camera is first powered it should be pingable on 192.0.0.64 for a few seconds. Ignore what IP gets allocated once the camera has booted that's not important for TFTP. Then camera should try to talk to 192.0.0.128... -

Usually it is 1234567a but I guess you've tried that. Or you can try Hikvision USA support as I understand they sometimes help. Or as long as you don't reset the device, you should be able to use SADP to reset password: generates export.xml, send to seller who sends to Hikvision, who sends... -

Oh and even if you do all that, the actual language flag is actually stored on a separate smart chip the kernel uses. And if you mess with it it will disable itself beyond even TFTP or UART recovery etc (same chip as in a credit card). If you already have a camera from aliexpress that is... -

cat6 shouldn't be needed. Though if bench test means it was solid before being deployed at the end of a long network cable, and now it isn't suggests the camera is OK. How long was it OK before putting it on the wall? Was it poe powered then also on the same switch as before? Does the camera... -

What Firmware Should I use?
I'm not clear of what camera types you are talking about. Of course, if you have Chinese region cameras using modified firmware to make them English, changing firmware will make the camera Chinese again.
