    Drive-by shooting!

Exactly. My plan is to try to use Home Assistant to change those setting when take control manually and also when I return it to PTZ mode.

    Drive-by shooting!

@bigredfish Your videos are super impressive. I'm on a one-way street so I will have one preset position. So I don't think I need a spotter cam to trigger the LPR function on the PTZ.

    Drive-by shooting!

Thank you. I understand the issue now. If I am going to get a PTZ and try it, which PTZ should I buy? The one I linked to earlier a relatively less expensive one and would be easier for me to install because I would be putting it on the side of my brick house about 25 feet above the ground, or...

    Drive-by shooting!

@CaptainCrunch I follow your analogy, but if I understand @wittaj and the other comments, if there is enough light then it would be able to focus on the pavement. Right?

    Drive-by shooting!

Thanks. @bidredfish's test results are impressive. I have a lot of street light because I'm in an urban setting. I think I probably have more than the ambient light in @bigredfish's tests because it never gets dark enough for the cameras in the front of my house to use IR at night. I wouldn't...

    Drive-by shooting!

@wittaj -- But if I return it its preset position, as @bigredfish and @Parley describe, then I would be okay, right? Even at night?
  7. C

    Drive-by shooting!

@bigredfish Sorry I am having trouble understanding. Would it work in the following context? Most of the time, the PTZ camera would stay in a fixed orientation looking at the street at an angle where I can see the passing cars' license plates. But sometimes, I would manually take control of this...

    Drive-by shooting!

@wittaj So am I correct in understanding that the PTZ camera's firmware does not allow the user to manually set the focus?

    Drive-by shooting!

I am still working on getting a camera to read license plates. I've been thinking it would be nice if I could use this PTZ camera to capture license plates. Because it is a PTZ, it would give me added ability to use it scan the street when there is trouble. Then when I am not actively using it...

    EmpireTech Model PTZ1A225-HNR-XA

Sometimes late at night, people hangout in front of the vacant house across the street from mine. I think this camera would allow me to get a good recording of them.

Anyone have a PTZ1A255-HNR-XA form EmpireTech? If so, how do you like it?

Is there a Blue Iris equivalent for Linux?

My point is that they need to invest in that equipment.

Is there a Blue Iris equivalent for Linux?

Yes. That's why I run Wireguard server on my router that uses dd-wrt. But I believe ASUS also makes routers with Wireguard server.

Is there a Blue Iris equivalent for Linux?

@mrvelous01 Try Frigate and run Wireguard server so you can see your cameras when you're away from home. It's amazing. I completely recommend it. There is no need to open holes in your firewall.

Divulging to much info on here

@antus and @Perimeter -- If you want to connect to your cameras remotely (i.e., when you are away from home using your smart phone or laptop), using a set up like the one @CanCuba describes, then you need to run a VPN server on your home network. This is what @wittaj is recommending. For...

Is there a Blue Iris equivalent for Linux?

I use Frigate ver. 0.12 on a little Minisforum GK41 with a Celeron J4125 running Ubuntu server 22.04. Frigate handles motion masks, zones, etc. and has very good object detection if you add a Google Coral to your set up. However, I don't think Frigate supports PTZ cameras yet. I believe the...

Best VPN to use? Asus appear to have added many more to their routers vi firmware

@CCTVCam Which Asus router are you using? I have Netgear r7000 that I installed ddwrt on and have been using Wireguard. Wireguard is excellent. It allows me to connect my laptop and iphone to my home network when I am away. That's how I look at my cameras and access Home Assistant.

    Drive-by shooting!

@wittaj I bought the cat6 combiner/splitter that you recommended. Thank you for suggesting it. I tested it out on one of the cables running to the rear of my house. I used it to add a new camera to my system--the new addition zooms into the area where I park my car. If anyone is looking for the...

    Drive-by shooting!

Unfortunately, I completed the renovation of my rowhouse and have no stomach for opening up any walls and floors to run more cat6 at this point. I wish I had run two sets of cat6 to each location but that ship sailed ages ago. I am going to try the splitter and see how it goes.
  20. C

    Drive-by shooting!

Okay. This is exactly how I hoped it worked. Thank you @wittaj

    Drive-by shooting!

@samplenhold I read the threads you created to guide folks on LPR cameras. Thank you for those. Pardon my ignorance. I am still trying to understand how license plate reading works. I purchased a IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E camera. BTW, the zoom on this thing is incredible. Here's my question. I...

    Drive-by shooting!

Unfortunately, my side of this block is all attached row houses--no driveways.

    Drive-by shooting!

I can't run the cat6 to the roof from the junction box in the front because I have a yankee gutter that the cable would have to traverse. And I'm in a historic district so the code enforcement folks will be on me like white on rice. I think I'll run the heavy duty (direct burial/UV) cat6 bare...

    Drive-by shooting!

I could mount the LPR camera on the side of the house closer to the intersection. I have another junction box there with cat6 for another turret camera monitoring the front facade. Do you think that would work better?
  25. C

    Drive-by shooting!

@wittaj No. There is a flat roof, but I have no cat6 up there. I have cat6 inside the junction box where the turret is located. My plan is to install a larger junction box and use a splitter to allow me to install another camera in the front. I wish I had run more cat6 when I had the house...

    Drive-by shooting!

Another question: When running cat6 outside, do you run it inside a conduit? Or just bare wire along the facade of the house?
  27. C

    Drive-by shooting!

@wittaj I could got a little higher, but I can go too much further otherwise I won't be able to mount it without a scaffolding. My plan is to try out different locations by opening a window on the floor above turret and seeing how it looks in the camera's field of view.

    Drive-by shooting!

Thank you to everyone for pointing me to some great threads here on LPR. I purchased a IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E and I will monitor it through Frigate. I understand that I need to zoom in and use a high shutter speed and color/BW, depending on the time. I think I can automate these by having my Home...

    Drive-by shooting!

Nice photos @CanCuba I notice that you have your cameras mounted pretty high. Does having them mounted higher help view the license plates of passing vehicles?

    Drive-by shooting!

Thank you @CanCuba These larger junction boxes would work if I were only going to use them to house the wires. I need something strong enough to mount my eyeball camera to and to contain the cat6 splitter. Any suggestions?
