What about managed switches for vlan?

Thanks. My home network is pretty basic (I think). Sitting in my basement: Cable modem (acting as router, wifi turned off) --> 16 port switch sitting right next to modem --> panel in the wall (routing ethernet to rest of house). I have a router on the main level that is acting only as a wifi...

What about managed switches for vlan?

HI, I see a lot of talk/suggestions here about setting a vlan up via the router. Would using a managed switch work as well? Doing something like suggested here: https://learncctv.com/the-use-of-vlans-in-cctv/ Part of the reason using a switch is attractive to me is: 1. My cable modem's...

    Is H.265 realistically possible?

Have you tried the Dahua 5200 series? I get that Blue Iris is generally accepted to be a better experience and have more functionality than a NVR, but having no experience in this space and not really having a handle on what is even possible, it is hard to quantify what ‘better’ is/means and if...

    Is H.265 realistically possible?

I assume the ‘But what cpu do I actually buy’ section of the choosing hardware wiki is based on h.264 with HA enabled? If so, what would the right processor be for h.265 and the camera set up noted above. Not sure if your comment about getting a nvr first will ‘do me good’ is sarcastic or not...

    Is H.265 realistically possible?

Hi, Trying to figure out Blue Iris or Dahua 52xx nvr. I understand many think Blue Iris is the way to go - I’ve read comments like “get a nvr first so you will really appreciate Blue Iris when you switch”, etc. Fair enough. But what I haven’t seen discussed (I’m sure it has been) is h.265 -...

And this is different than what the tripwire in your 5216 nvr can do?

And further, I am still not sure that I really have any use cases for AI at my home setting.

    Dahua AI Series Thread

Yes, I am still deciding between Blue Iris and Dahua NVR. Do you know: If talking NVR and and AI camera, is there any benefit to have an AI NVR vs. an equivalent non-AI NVR? If talking Blue Iris, does there need to be updates to the BI software for it to see/support the camera’s AI functionality?

    Dahua AI Series Thread

Looking forward to this. I am quite interested in these cams. I assume (and based on your comment in the first post) if one has an AI camera, that means one does not need to use a Dahua AI nvr to get the AI functionality? If this is the case, assuming you go all AI cameras, is there any...

Looping back to AI NVRs. Do you know, if a guy buys the AI cameras, is an AI NVR necessary to get the AI functionality? Or will a ‘plain Jane’ 5200 work and detect/use the AI features from the camera?

Got it. The benefit of varifocals being you can better target the area to be monitored. Sort of ‘set it and forget it’.

So, looking at the 4216 AI Lite NVR. Specs state bandwidth as 200Mbps (80Mbps with AI enabled). Trying to make sure this is sufficient bandwidth: Looking at HDW5542TM-AS - looks like it has a maximum bit rate of 8192 Kbps. I believe this translates to about 8.2Mbps. So if the math is correct...

So, then can the initial nvr setup (where you have to use the machine interface) be completed without any cameras connected? Wondering if I could set the nvr up in a place a little more comfortable than the furnace room and then move it down there after, connect the cameras and set the rest up...

Thx. I imagine with the web browser you can access the nvr from any computer on your network. Maybe I could wire everything to the basement and stick the nvr in the furnace room. Then any potential noise issues become non-existent. But would be a major pain if I ever needed to access the...

I hear you. Works out to be about a $160 CAD risk for me including an 8 port PoE switch ($220 risk with 16 port PoE). Can get a NVR5216-4KS2 V2 for about $360 cdn. So, would be out at most $200 if I decided the NVR is not for me - of course if we start talking the AI NVRs, I guess that...

The AI features look neat, but I am having a hard time envisioning how useful they would be in a home setting. Maybe using Stranger mode to identify canvassers and such? What are you thinking some of your use cases would be?

Thanks for the input. Yes, I probably just need to pickup a couple of cameras and give things a go. I am not sure I even want to step near the Blue Iris rabbit hole - I have fallen into many rabbit holes with other computer related items and while I enjoy it, it becomes such a consumer of time...

Thanks, I will take a look for those threads. Regarding the varifocals, I assume the zooming is all manually done (via the software)? i.e. the software/camera would not automatically zoom in on a given activity, correct? - say someone getting into (or tampering with) a car that is out in the...

A couple of newbie questions here - when talking the motorized lens/zoom of the bullet vs. the the turret. 1. The turret says fixed lens with focal length of 2.8, 3.8, 6. What does this mean? That you can manually adjust the zoom to those three settings? Having a hard time reconciling a fixed...

Thanks for the awesome replay! I really appreciate it. Going to reread it and check some of the links tomorrow. NVR is appealing, will take a look at your suggestion and give it more thought. I do have concern about the noise though - I have read they are all fairly loud. It will be located...

    High cpu

I know this is an older post, but I am thinking about a Blue Iris set up (vs. nvr) and am wondering what typically causes the most cpu usage. Number of cameras aside, is it the act of recording 24/7 at a given bitrate or the motion detection or something else or all of the above? I seem to...
