Is two NIC’s to segregate cams from internet a tin foil hat?

Samplenhold- That thread title was just a form of clickbait having some fun intended to generate reactions and helpful information. When I wrote “tinfoil hat”, I was wondering if everybody who felt it important to install a second NIC was also setting up a VLAN to isolate all their IoT devices...

Is two NIC’s to segregate cams from internet a tin foil hat?

Does Netgear provide a back door into their routers for ISP’s? I own my router, they didn’t supply it. They did supply the cable modem, which I promptly set to bridge mode because I didn’t want to use their WiFi or give them that level of control.

Is two NIC’s to segregate cams from internet a tin foil hat?

Grandkids were watching TV streaming via WiFi, so I did the next best thing: I unplugged the network cable between my router and the rest of my network. Then I went out to my BI PC, (temporarily located in my workshop in another building), and I can still see my cameras live from one end of my...

Is two NIC’s to segregate cams from internet a tin foil hat?

Isn’t there a difference between “going through the router” and “having access to the router?” As I understand network communications, when my camera streams its feed to the BI PC via one, two, or 3 switches separate from the router, it is doing so via ARP tables in the switch directing the...

Is two NIC’s to segregate cams from internet a tin foil hat?

I have searched a fair bit and not found a satisfactory answer to this question. My router is set to block the cameras from having access to the internet. Wife and I are both retired, so only computer always on our network is the Blue Iris PC. We surf the net using iPads, stream YouTube TV or...

VPN to similar network IP scheme

Thanks for posting this. Since I anticipate using my VPN regularly when at one of my kids‘ houses, I‘ll look at configuring my home network with a different private address scheme.

Recommend an Asus WiFi Mesh system for me

Thanks for the recommendation. I had pretty much concluded that I’d get an AX68U and reconfigure the Netgear as an AP. Then yesterday I updated the Netgear’s firmware, did a reset on it, and by doing so finally resolved a problem I’ve been living with for years. Now I will see if I can get its...

Academic question about IP address assignment

Thank you, brobin. That makes sense. If I understand you correctly, If I had connected the WAN port of the router being used as an AP, it would have been assigned an IP address by the DHCP function of the gateway router. Since I didn’t, that assignment never occurred, and all communication...

Academic question about IP address assignment

I believe when you do that you have also configured the WAN port to act as a LAN port.

Academic question about IP address assignment

All typical settings for a home network. Router serving as router, DHCP and DNS server, all set to 192.168.1.1. DHCP disabled on E2500. Only network connections via Ethernet cable between PC NIC and LAN ports of the 3 devices. I don’t understand what info you need that I’m not providing. Please...

Academic question about IP address assignment

Yes, the DHCP server has been disabled on the E2500. As noted in the second sentence of my post, connection to the E2500 is via a LAN port, not the WAN port. When I initially configured the E2500, after uploading newest firmware and a factory reset, I changed it’s IP address to one I knew...

Academic question about IP address assignment

My home network currently consists of an ISP-provided cable modem configured as a bridge only to my Netgear R7220 router/AP. connected to one of the LAN ports is an unmanaged switch which feeds two CAT6 cables, each serving a different outbuilding. One of those cables is connected to a LAN port...

Recommend an Asus WiFi Mesh system for me

As an update, I reconfigured an unused router/AP to function solely as an AP with the same SSID setup as in the main part of the house and connected it in an outbuilding and my mobile device transitioned seamlessly, so I’ll definitely try that approach before investing in any mesh nodes. Now...

Recommend an Asus WiFi Mesh system for me

Thanks again. This is why I asked here. I am completely comfortable with adding an AP or two, and that’s an economically viable approach for a retired guy, having done a couple already.

Recommend an Asus WiFi Mesh system for me

Thanks Spaceman. I‘m already using a Ubiquiti Access Point in my detached workshop, and there’s a part of me that wants to just add a couple of access points in the house. I’m leery, though, of our mobile devices automatically switching when we move from one end of the house to the other if I...

Recommend an Asus WiFi Mesh system for me

I’m looking to upgrade from my Netgear router/AP to an ASUS mesh system. House is about 90 feet long, all on one floor, internet enters at one end, and that’s the current modem and router location. Main reason for switching is to get OpenVPN capability for remote access to my Blue Iris box, and...
