Dahua Starlight Fixed Lens Turret (IPC-HDW4231EM-AS)

How are these for overview cameras? I'm thinking 4 or 5 of these about 20ft off the ground just giving me wide angle views of the garden. Probably leave them in colour 24hr as the LED floods will complement. Would be nice to know the colour of clothing of any intruders during the night...

New computer needed for Blue Iris

Yes but also remember that MBP CPU is a mobile variation (I think) and also 5 generations old. That old CPU doesn't have Quick Sync Video on-board which is a massive help for BI processing.

New computer needed for Blue Iris

OK yeah fair enough. I guess what I was getting at was to have the PC gracefully shutdown 15 minutes after the UPS detected a power failure and then boot back up once the UPC detected the power was back on.

New computer needed for Blue Iris

No contest. I think the i7 in the above MBP is a second generation processor whereas you've just bought a sixth generation CPU. For nothing else it has the hardware decoding.

    Pre-trigger Video Buffer

A question on the Pre-trigger video buffer. Is this only effectively enabled if you are not recording continuously? I'm recording 24/7 but setting alerts when motion is detected. When using iPhone app or desktop software, I'm not seeing any video buffer at all (I have it set to 5 seconds). As...

    10 cameras - Intel Core i5-4690K Processor 3.5 GHz

Yes I used to run VMware Fusion I think on OSX for Windows. You might be able to download free, time limited, Windows VM's from Microsoft for testing and they should do the job for you. BI uses zones. So I can set up multiple zones on my camera image and have BI detect motion in a zone...

New computer needed for Blue Iris

I'm the other way. Been Windows all my life and a few years ago I bought a MacBook Air. I gave OSX 3 years and just couldn't bond with it. Now running Windows 10 on the MBA...

New computer needed for Blue Iris

On thing to keep in mind if you're putting the PC remotely is to enable auto-restart in the bios if there's a power failure (and make sure the PC has that option available). I'd put a good UPS in there and configure the PC to do a graceful shutdown in the event of a power failure and reboot once...

    Dahua Backdoor Uncovered

Just to chime in. When I replaced my Apple Airport Extreme router with an Asus RT-AC68U recently I was surprised at the number of UPnP ports my Hikvision cameras had opened. I quickly disabled UPnP on the router and blocked the 6 cameras from accessing the internet - a 2 minute job on the...

Second Driveway Dahua Starlight Turret is up

Is this the IPC-HDW5231R-Z? Have to say that looks very very good. In my case the driveway is the only entrance onto my property unless you climb a wall so I'm putting one of the Ultras on that (IPC-HFW8232E-Z) and going to zoom it right in from 25ft away. Also have a IPC-HDW5231R-Z on the way...

New from Florida need some insight on new system

If it was me I'd go: Windows 10 PC running Blue Iris, 4th generation i5 or better, 8GB RAM, as big a WD Purple hard drive as you can afford. (Blue Iris). People on here tend to buy Dell Optiplex 5040, 7040 etc systems off ebay with warranty. Blue Iris companion phone app Decent quality PoE...

Yeah that sounds a little high. i7 4790 here with 6 x 3MP (plus 4 x 640px) cameras and I'm only at 10%. As mentioned above are you running the demo still?

Dahua NVR Reboots during the day

I wanted a neater solution, that's all. But I'm not going for aesthetics if the machine doesn't work. No other reason I was looking to change. Also realised I like having BI running on my workstation PC so it's easy to flick open the app and take a look. Also the BI companion iPhone app is very...

    Video Storage Options

USB should only be a max of 5m. Not entirely sure how the Ethernet adapters would work at that distance. Can your cameras take an SD card? Might be the cheap and easy solution. If it was me it would be some form of NAS or an old PC with hard drives. How are you going to control the hard...

    Thinking about going desktop

I agree, they shouldn't be. Something is and slowing down over time. No idea what it is but I'd prefer to move BI to another machine (or an NVR as it's smaller). Forgot I also have Plex server on that machine so there's another contender (and all my rips are lossless Blu-ray and not transcoding...
