Help with IP Cam. Network doesn't show it.

Set your pc ip address to 192.168.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0. Ensure only one camera is connected at one time. Use your browser to go to 192.168.1.108 and change the ip address appropriately. Repeat for the second camera.

    Diving in here

Welcome to the forum. I'd recommend the Blue Iris route for the features, flexibility and scalability that it offers. You can find a used capable pc for a reasonable price on eBay or craigslist. I'd also recommend getting a managed POE switch as this gives you a lot more options in terms of...

    Inbound and Outbound vpn's

Outbound is from your home to the internet. Inbound is from the internet to your home. Getting a paid VPN service will not affect your ability to access your NVR.

    Stymied trying to install IPC-HDW5231R-ZE

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with cable modems as I've never had cable, but it appears that that is the issue. Usually you would put your current modem into bridge mode, thereby allowing you own router to handle all functions. Since this is a modem, it is already in bridge mode. Hopefully...

    Stymied trying to install IPC-HDW5231R-ZE

It's really simple to set it up on the Asus routers. Make sure you set up DDNS if you have a dynamic ip. I no longer have either Asus or Merlin Firmware on my RT-AC66U, but I remember it was fairly straight forward. Look at this link: [VPN] How to set up the ASUSWRT for VPN Server – OpenVPN |...

    Basic Network Question

I think he/she is trying to access the camera which is connected via wifi to the router which is on a different subnet from the pc that is connected to the router, that seems to be my interpretation of it. Just need he/she to confirm whether this is actually the case.

What router are you using? Are you running native or third party firmware? Let us the know model number and we can point you in the right direction. As regards VPN, there are number of routers that natively support OpenVPN server and it is simply a case of configuring it. When you use a paid...

Don't forget to block all traffic from the cameras to the internet. For external access setup an inbound VPN e.g. OpenVPN server, if you haven't already done so.

Is Dahua the best bang for the buck?

Welcome. Read the Cliff Notes and the Wikis on this site. Bullet cameras have the problem of attracting spiders so for external cameras, turret is your best bet.

Use your browser and type in the ip address of the camera. Login to the web interface and then go to the appropriate setting. Yes, it is like writing it to the chip of the camera. If you forget the ip or enter it incorrectly, you will need to reset the camera.

    Basic Network Question

Are you trying to connect to the wireless camera that's on a different subnet to the pc? Does your router have a static route to the camera set up?

Connect your Mac directly to the POE switch and change your network adapter's IP address to 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. Open your browser and type in the ip address 192.168.1.108 and see if you get the web admin interface.

New and still a little confused.

I'm not gong to comment on VPN service providers as I currently don't use one, but you do have the right idea. A paid VPN service provides outgoing "privacy" and OpenVPN server provides a secure connection to your home network.

    New member has a concern

Yes, that's correct. You don't want the cameras to talk at all to the internet, so you will block all the ports. See, you are getting the hang of this.:headbang:

In step 6 of those instructions, select ip address range and add 192.168.0.100 in the first box and 192.168.0.102 in the last box. Sorry, didn't realise I had made a typo there. This will block just the 3 cameras from accessing the internet. You will need to change some settings on the cameras...

    New member has a concern

Take a look at page 36 of the manual here: www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/C7100V/C7100V_UM_EN.pdf. You will need to block all ports for the ip address range 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0101 which is the range for the ip cameras. When we say dual nic, we mean a computer with 2 network interface...

    New member has a concern

Before you do anything else, I'd suggest getting your cameras secured, i.e. block their connection to the internet using your router. I know you want to use your NAS, but like others on this forum I'd highly recommend that you go with a dual nic Blue Iris pc as this will give you a lot more...

New house .. prewired for 6 cameras .. need help deciding on which cameras to get

Varifocals are quicker to install whereas for fixed lens, you will need to work out where each camera will go. I'd suggest you go with Blue Iris and a pc rather than an NVR as you will have a lot more functionality and flexibility in your system.

Need help understanding networking and looking for a router to install and setup a VPN for my cameras

There's nothing wrong with used hardware especially the RT-AC66U as long as it works. You could install the latest Asus firmware on it or you could install FreshTomato if you wanted to do vlans. This router would in effect replace your ISPs router for all functions, you would just set your...
