    IR Cannon w/Adjustable Focus

I can't find a source for these online anymore. If you're into do-it-yourself projects, you can use a lens with 850nm IR LED(s) to get a similar effect. I made the one in the photo below a year ago and it has been working well since. I had to come up with my own LED current driver. As I recall...

    IR Cannon w/Adjustable Focus

Glad that fixed it. Yeah, I was so sure it was the light itself. I took it down and put up a different known-good unit on the same supply. Had the same issue and only then realized it. The cheap 12V supplies I used are not the bargain they seemed at first.

    IR Cannon w/Adjustable Focus

FWIW one of mine also stopped working (dim and flickering badly), but on further investigation it turned out to be my 12V supply that was flaking out. Replaced the supply, and it's back in action.

what can be determined from low-quality video

I saw that Tampa PD wants to locate a person that they show walking and running on some low-quality, heavily compressed video clips. It seems to me possible , if they have some people walk along the same track at night and look at the same camera output and compare the results, they ought...

    Suspect Arrested

Thanks for that tip. I gather this is a PIR sensor, I have found those work well for people (at least the good quality ones, not the cheap type that have many false alarms). However I have never been able to get them to reliably work for cars. Maybe I need to combine both a PIR and a...

    Suspect Arrested

I can tell you in CA, any attempted crime is itself a crime, with punishment up to 1/2 that of the original attempted crime. You do have to establish intent to commit the crime. "Attempted Crimes" in California Criminal Law | Penal Code 21a & 664 However in CA, burglary from an auto...

    Suspect Arrested

That's an impressive capture. Great work managing to get this guy arrested! I briefly owned a PTZ which was good during daytime, but I returned it after discovering it had no manual exposure controls to reduce some overexposure issues at night. I guess the high end models will...

    another package thief

Not my video; this is from West San Jose. This guy doesn't seem to care much. Nice t-shirt tho. PackageThief_10-17-17 EDIT: no date/time on the video but it happened on Tuesday, 17 Oct 2017. Apparently the package contained some coffee-making supplies.

    Semi Driver vs Power Lines

That's an excellent angle for license plate capture, for most of us it's hard to put a camera that close to the street. As for "why" someone would do this... in the four years in my current location, if I'd had such a system running 24/7 by now I would have recorded several burglary getaway...

    Dedicated License Plate Cam project

If the purple dots indicate auto-detected corners of the plate, it looks pretty close and the program ought to be able to see it. But I think the ALPR code was mostly tested with plates that are very close to horizontal, and it looks like your camera is somewhat tilted.

    Who Watches The Watchers?

The police provide a vital function to the public. The public also has a right to expect them to follow procedure and not act recklessly. Cops among Florida's worst speeders, Sun Sentinel investigation finds "Excessive speed," Margate Police Chief Jerry Blough warned his officers, is a...

Another porch package theft in San Jose. She certainly took her time thinking about it. (yes, not the greatest camera angle- not my videos.) The woman: The car:

car crashes into light pole (not my video)

On my browser at least, that link shows a web page with a playable video visible. The car rides up onto the sidewalk and makes a direct hit on the utility pole, while nicely centered in the camera frame. The pole breaks off and falls down onto the car. Not shown in the video, but apparently the...

I'm Tempted To Start Shaming The Neighbors

The technical part is easy, you can get a HB100 doppler radar module under $10. Smaller than a deck of cards, intended for very short-range use but it can measure speed of cars with maybe 100' of range, if you can place it right beside the road. As others have said, my understanding is the...

    police body cams

Best way to preserve all possibly relevant data. Recorded by the camera doesn't mean transferred to the main database, or preserved for more than 72 hours or some short time. Recorded certainly doesn't mean published online. If it's a police camera, that means the police are responsible for...

    police body cams

Surely 100% record is the best way, I guess some people say this might scare off witnesses. But surely if a weapon is fired- probably also just drawn- it seems to me pretty much always worth having a record of. I can understand how in a crisis situation there might be other things on an...

    Lightning

Impressive to me that your camera system survived and continued to operate with a direct hit. Long ago there was a long-wire antenna out my 2nd-story bedroom window. Fortunately I was downstairs when the lightning hit the antenna and blasted our telephone, tv, radio, lights etc. and started a...

    police body cams

Maybe a little off topic here, but I'm really curious about this... apparently police body cams, at least the ones in the city referenced below, even when nominally "off" have a continuous 30-second loop buffer so they can record whatever happened in the 30 seconds before they are activated...

    Thiefs

A new law in CA takes effect in 2019 requiring temporary plates before the official ones come, like most (all?) other states do. We'll see if that changes anything. http://dougdemuro.kinja.com/california-s-ridiculous-temporary-license-plate-rules-n-1579711846 New law will require temporary...

I'm Tempted To Start Shaming The Neighbors

Nice work; I had no idea surplus working units were available as cheaply as that! You can get very cheap doppler radar components on ebay, but I think they are for short-range indoor motion detector use. For example HB100 Microwave Doppler Radar Wireless Module Motion Sensor 10.525GHz Radar...

sounds you don't want to hear near your house

I don't know if this belongs here as there's no useful video, only audio, but this happened fairly close by and put a woman in the hospital. Police confirmed the incident but aren't saying much. I heard police recovered 9mm casings from the street. I don't know anything about guns, but for...

Court decides destroying cameras doesn't give you legal privilege

What is most surprising to me is that the police actually proposed this argument in court. Thankfully, the court didn't buy it. Also, an argument for having more than one kind of camera setup. Court: Smashing Cameras Doesn’t Give You a “Reasonable Expectation of Privacy” ...although the...

    Any "macro" cameras?

If you use a simple fixed-focus camera and unscrew the M12-type lens partway, you will move the focus in closer. I would think you could probably make it focus down to 1 foot. I have replaced the factory-stock lens on two Dahua IPC-HDW4431C cameras so it is possible to do. Next best thing under...
