    Meth Head at the House

I view this as positive because in recent history (10 years), this kind of thing would have never made national news for a single officer killed without lurid circumstances. Maybe things and attitudes are changing! My understanding is that SWAT was there, but it was a non-incident. Although the...

    Meth Head at the House

Kingsport police and swat, possibly with FBI and US Marshals arrested the suspect. I have his name, but it has not been released yet. I'll be looking for a picture to see if I have him on my cameras after midnight wandering around. @wittaj I checked my footage, and three vehicles came by...

    Meth Head at the House

Unfortunately, he died about 30 minutes ago. Two of my cameras recorded sounds of the gunshots about 0.8 miles away. No publicly released suspect names at this time, but the reward currently sits at $20,000.

    Meth Head at the House

I am very sad this morning. The officer that came to investigate this, and one we saw several other times, was shot early this morning. He is a very nice guy, and we are praying for his recovery. https://wcyb.com/news/local/vsp-investigating-shooting-of-officer-in-big-stone-gap

    AR15 at 3:35 am

It's running full IR in manual mode, so I have as much IR as the camera can provide. Plus, aimed the same direction is a 5442T-ZE also running full IR. :) Shutter was probably running at 40 ms, not sure, I've changed it a few times since then! I definitely need to work on dialing in the image!

Kenosha Shooter Kyle Rittenhouse; Criminal, Murderer or Citizen Defender.

I believe they tumble after going through something, like a person, if they don't hit bone. Or after going through a couple of sheets of wallboard and the like. Not unique to the 5.56 though.

Best way to join 2 Cat6 cables

In wires and pipes, the fewer joints or connections the more reliable. I have always heard that the twists in ethernet are like some kind of magic, and should be untwisted as little as possible to prevent crosstalk and interference. I suspect @user8963 has some experience with ethernet that I do...

    Smudge on Lens

Yes! I was playing around with the camera, and noticed I got all sorts of bleed and interference when zoomed all the way in. From street lights and IR reflections. Both sides of the FOV were severely washed out at times, from things outside the FOV. This location has two other IR cameras...

I got a "new" @EMPIRETECANDY 5241E-Z12E and set it on the porch to make sure it works, test it out, etc. Last time I put a camera up temporarily to test it, for ONE freaking day, I caught a meth head in our garage, just looking around. This time I caught a guy from down the street walking by...

    Smudge on Lens

I received a couple of "new" cameras from @EMPIRETECANDY and his refurbished list. I set the IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E on the porch and aimed it down the street. The car is about 225 feet from the camera, and the camera is NOT optimized, I was just making sure it all worked. Until I saw the smudge...

City of Phoenix Plans 48 Cameras .... $2 Million

Most of the time when "opportunities" like this arise, they turn it from beef to pork. In this case, I suspect that the "infrastructure" will be used, or at least planned, for other things. The problem with such planning is that it is never finished. They think of all sorts of big, wild ideas...

How to estimate fixed focal from a vari-focal ?

I set my focal lengths based on the specified horizontal angle of view. At a given distance from the camera this translates, with the help of trigonometry, to a field of view in feet. The varifocal allows you to see if the view is enough for you to identify what you want to under your specific...

    Farm Wifi / oh-my

Wifi is NOT the same as the Ubiquiti Nanostations or similar. The Nanos are dedicated radio links designed to replace ethernet cable up to a certain speed. Wifi is great for devices, computers, TVs, etc, which are designed to have interruptions. Apparently, surveillance cameras are not, and you...

    Network & Wifi Planning

I have 13 cameras now, thanks to a couple of "new" refurbished Andy Cams, ranging up to 4 MP. Network bandwidth is not the issue. My main backbone is GB. I could end up with 20 cameras, probably no more than that. I cannot physically segregate the camera network, any future segregation would be...

    Network & Wifi Planning

Wifi coverage is fine. It is the Google mesh system that is troublesome. The damned thing takes one or more of my APs (Google Wifi "puck" or whatever) that is wired, with a known good connection, and switches to mesh wireless. With metal roofs, and cinder block walls, speed drops to maybe 20...

    Network & Wifi Planning

I should add, it's just two of us 95% of the time. We use the network for movies, music, surfing, and uploading videos of stupid people the cameras catch. Not that heavy. Currently we have Comcast with 300/12 Mbps. It runs around that when I test it. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk

I have a complicated "compound" of three buildings spread across an acre. I currently have a Google Wifi Mesh system that, uhhh, has challenges. help on selecting the "right" camera-

Need guidance - Networking two buildings

Unless you can go aerial, running fiber or Ethernet will be a little challenging. After going over my options for getting a camera at a garage about 75 feet away, considering the cost and effort of conduit or direct burial, I went with a pair of Ubiquiti radio links. Works great, even with one...

Is reolink a swear word here?

The primary issue with ReoLink for getting the best video, is the lack of ability to set video parameters. As such, it produces decent enough video of someone walking in daylight. But when it comes to night time, it is a blur. Cheap they are, but you get what you pay for. If you want to see what...
