    Security question

I run a Hikvision NVR with several Hikvision cameras connected directly to the NVR. The NVR is connected to my home network so I can make modifications to NVR and camera settings. I do not remote access so I don't port forward. What are my current camera/network security risks? Is there a...

Help with low quality DSL router/modem

Am I understanding this right? The issue only applys to two models and the exploit relies on the router’s default password to work. Sounds like updating firmware, are even more simply applying a strong password eliminates the problem.

Are camera's useful anymore for theft?

To me, cameras are an essential addition to a secure house, but are not designed to "protect" you. Firearms are! If you have zero experience with guns please carefully consider before you buy. Get training. In your case, lots of training. And remember, owning and shooting a firearm is...

Need storage solution for RV installation

When you say RV are you speaking of a motorhome or trailer? I've pulled travel trailers and 5th wheels for years and occasionally a bad road or pothole has totally rearranged the furniture. I can't imagine a spinning HD lasting too long.

    Router for VPN

Yes, but I'm not experienced. I've been checking out some of the websites that give the details of the hack, and I gotta tell you it's a little intimidating. But on the other hand it works, or I brick it. What's the worst that can happen?? I've tore up a lot more expensive stuff.

    Router for VPN

I'm liking that deal! I've seen folks doing this hack and I thought it might be above my pay grade but I think I could pull it off. Thanks for the links. I never buy refurb stuff but is it really possible to get one in pretty good condition? Might find one on Ebay with pics and condition...

    Router for VPN

Help me understand. Then how does the 68 encrypt/decrypt? Software? Seems like everything I've read about he 68 indicates it handles tunnel VPN great. Please understand I'm not questioning that the newer 86 is not the optimal choice, my lack of knowledge on this subject is making it...

    Router for VPN

Aesthetics are not important. I don't mind the small price difference but after looking at the 86 doubt I would ever need the features. Also, I'm finding reviews more negative on it vs, the 68 which seems to have become a very stable router for those using it. I would think however, ASUS...

    Router for VPN

Sounds like the 68 would be fine for me as I only have cable service at about 30mbps down and 2mbps up. No gaming, streaming etc. I'm assuming this is enough bandwidth to view my camera system. I'm pretty lame at networking but I'm guessing the OpenVPN setup, host and client, can't be too...

    Router for VPN

After reading the VPN primer thread, as well as other VPN threads, I'm thinking the Asus RT-AC68U might be the easiest way to set up remote access for my camera system. I like the idea of OpenVPN being built in to the router, and it looks fairly easy to set up. My requirements for a wireless...

    Cameras on LAN

My LAN is 192/168/.0.xxx and if cameras are connected to NVR the camera addresses become 192.168.254.xxx. In this case should each camera be set up to be blocked by "parental controls" or just block the NVR MAC addresse only, since the cameras are behind the NVR?

    Cameras on LAN

Well, my networking skills are pretty basic so I'm relying on info from this forum. UPnP is disabled on my router. The only way I see to block cameras from internet is through "parental controls" where instead of blocking a computer, I enter the MAC address for each camera. Again, my basic...

    Cameras on LAN

I have 2 systems running, both with Hikvision cameras. One is a BI computer, and the other is a Hikvision NVR. On both systems I have the cameras on POE switches connected to the LAN. I have seen various posts recommending subnets using 2 nic cards on a BI computer using one nic to feed the...

    Anybody know what this is?

Demon WP Insecticide works great against spiders. It does require spraying a few times per year. I put a plastic Walmart bag around my cameras when spraying to prevent it getting on camera/lens. I am going to look into the Spectracide Bug Stop since it may last longer.

Hikvision NVR not connecting to cameras

Sounds great but when connecting PC to NVR's port we are talking about a POE port. This has got to be a dumb question but we have voltage coming out of this port to power the camera. What prevents this from damaging the ethernet port on the PC? I can't tell on the NVR's menu Camera>POE...

    Looking for opinions on NVR's

I agree, however just for info, the NVR is set for H.264 video encoding. After rechecking the camera settings I did have one of the 5 cameras set to H.265, and changed setting back to H.264. Might make a difference, however the NVR menu has a drop down box for video encoding but the only...

    Looking for opinions on NVR's

Yes, I had direct to disc enabled. Nothing was changed in the cameras on the change-over to the NVR. I am not knowledgeable enough to explain the storage differential, but it's there. I've witnessed the BI vs. NVR debates over and over and have no intention of giving an opinion. I really...

    Looking for opinions on NVR's

I've had BI running for 3 years and it's been perfect. Five Hikvision cameras and two Geovision cameras. Over the last month I've been playing with a Hikvision 8P-6084K NVR and for my needs it will do everything my BI computer did. I know for the power user there are many more features that...
