How often do you review footage?

Daily, takes about 5 minutes to check the footage from 10:00 P.M. - 6:00 A.M. Saw someone hiding in the front yard once at 2:00 A.M. as a car passed. I am guessing he had warrants for arrest and was making sure it was not a cop car. Door checkers. Teenagers up to mischief. Random people...

    Just another newbie

:welcome: Start slow and learn before spending money. Read the Cliff Notes located in the wiki. https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/ip-cam-talk-cliff-notes/ Don't be afraid to ask questions, this is one of the kindest technical forums I have seen for new members.

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Make a couple short test cables, like six foot, and check them out on your test bench. It is good practice for the longer runs. It also gets easier after you make a few cables, there is a slight learning curve. Use the "B" standard also. You will find A and B standard diagrams on the Klein tool.

    Cable questions

Is there anything else I am missing or should be looking at? I have used that True Cable with good results. If you buy the True Cable, buy the True Cable Brand Pass through connectors. I have that Klein tool and the Klein connectors are a tad small for that wire. There is a thread I posted...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Look at Monoprice if you go with pre-made cables. Monoprice is also a good place to get wire if you terminate your own cables.

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

If you have not bought pre-made cables it is not hard to make your own. Before I arrived here I never made one cable, using the Klein VD226-110 ($50 at Home Depot) and pass through connectors, it is not difficult to make your own cable.

I assume 4 "boosters" implies you are already fully vaccinated? So four shots or six shots? Are these people insane :wtf:

Blueiris settings for continuous recording and alerts

I have BI and a 4TB WD purple in use and have three cams recording 24/7, two Dahua 5442 5MP, and a Dahua 2231 2MP, and three other cams that record on motion. I have no issues getting 30 days so you should be fine.

Could I end up with "too many" cameras? Consequences?

The Dahua 5442 is a small and highly recommended turret camera, compare the size to other offerings. Mounted on the Dahua PFB mount it practically disappears once you are about 25' away.

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

I have a dedicated rig but it sometimes is used for extra duty. Yesterday I was streaming Spotify, copying a 1 GB file external to my BI PC extra hard drive, and of course all my cams recording, and viewing some BI clips, pegged 10GB RAM usage out of 16GB total. Ryzen 2700 is the CPU. I...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Don't let the "100's of hours" to learn Blue Iris dissuade you, using information on this forum I had my first cam up in running in a couple hours after posting my initial hiccups on this forum and quickly getting answers. Blue Iris is complex but default settings gives you a superb product for...

    It turned into a hobby

I have several unmounted cams that were purchased with no final destination in mind just to test them and play with them, so I fall into the hobbyist camp too.

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Follow the advice above, it is good advice by knowledgeable people. I started with one Dahua cam and Blue Iris to get my feet wet. I now have 6 cams mounted and several more I have not found the time and location to mount. Plan on more than four cameras. I planned on four cams max and quickly...

    Pandemic threat? Anyone else concerned?

Has to check in with Mr. Flu. Something to hide, Joe? Biden says he hasn't made a decision on whether he'll sign bill that declassifies all information about COVID's origins, despite House unanimously passing legislation to do so Story

Build a cedar birdhouse around the cam. Cut the lens hole to fit the cam lens as close to perfectly as you can.

dahua settings and general approach to recording

I recommend you read and reread the wiki and posts related to your specific cameras, optimize blue iris settings per the recommendations, get everything up and running, and slowly make changes as you observe recordings that you feel need improvement (motion blur, night images, FPS, Etc).

I'm looking for a dome camera better than 4K

Take a look at the IPC-B5442E-Z4E, about $250, this will give you good range to read a plate on the driveway picture you posted. My 5442 3.6 fixed will not read plates at 50', 40' maybe with some characters fuzzy as is that a 5 or S, 30' generally always.

    Greetings from newbie

Those videos will provide way more information than needed to get up and running. Most are pretty confusing until you get more familiar with the system. At default settings you will still have a very good system. I started with a Dahua 2231 varifocal which is a common beginner recommendation...

    Greetings from newbie

:welcome: Welcome, Blue Iris is a great software package. I am not a techie and had very minimal issues getting it up and running. Been running 24/7/365 for over 2 years with no issues. Buy it from the Ipcamtalk store. I like Dahua cameras, buy the EmpireTech rebrands to save money and get...

    IPC-HDW5442T-ZE vs IPC-HDW5442TM-ASE

Based on what I have read here the fixed focal model has a slight edge in night time performance compared to the varifocal. The DORI of the varifocal may come into play vs. a fixed length.

Help me spend $20,000 (new information in post #23)

I run redundant systems with primarily BI and Synology which comes with a couple free licenses so why not. One of the systems could be configured to offload to something like Amazon Web Services (cloud). Peplink makes some nice routers with failover systems.

Help me spend $20,000 (new information in post #23)

Buy the Dahua cameras from BHPhoto, you will get the same cameras as Andy but pay twice the price. Buy the 1/1.2 cameras in lieu of any 5442 fixed. Build a triple redundant system, such as one or two NVR's and one or two BI PC's and set them up in different locations so it complicates the...
