New Video Surveillance System - Suggestions and input wanted

You might consider going with a 240g Solid State Disk (ssd) - for your os & software drive - sure helps on boot times. I use Crucials; a lot of folks like Samsung EVO's. It's cheap insurance for quick boots. Also, don't forget about UPS for your PoE switch and BI PC. I like TP-Link also -...

    Separate Network for IP Cameras?

@Diggs - thanks for the input - I've been in IT 30+ years also and relatively new to the camera game as well, but I screwed around enough with the cameras and wifi to know it's not reliable enough (for me) to implement. Instead I ran cat5e to the 7 locations I have cameras - that's been some...

would you buy a refurbished harddrive?

I developed kiosk software (airline industry) some years ago back when OS/2 was all the rage (ok, maybe it was actually rage *at* OS/2, but I digress) - it took about 5 to 10 minutes to boot up fully then (app loaded, etc.) - that was 20 years ago though. Imagine what the landscape will be 20...

would you buy a refurbished harddrive?

No difference in size - all 2.5" - for desktop you'll need an adapter such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BH3Z8E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 As @Razer explained - the difference in price is due in part to the memory used and subsequent affect on the life of...

    Update failed, 12002

Update: Enabled firewall, tried a couple more times to update, finally downloaded and installed ok. Seems that the server providing the update files must be busy. The default time for automatic updating is 2 AM, so I'll bet everyone is hitting the download at the same time. I'll pick another...

Strange circle in video feed, bad CCD?

It's obviously some type of "liquid" as you can force it to change shapes by tapping it. To my way of thinking it's less likely that a drop of anything external (water, etc) would get into the lens that way because it's a sealed, weatherproof camera. That's why I was thinking it may have been...

    Update failed, 12002

The automated updates have failed with 12002 since 3.60. Worked fine before that, no changes to network or BI pc. Updating manually (BI -> Options -> Check for Updates) has worked in the past, however now (attempting to update to 3.60.04) it's hanging at "Downloading update (128k/28692k)" for a...

Strange circle in video feed, bad CCD?

I'm thinking it's some type of oil, maybe from manufacturing. There's a slight color difference inside the circle than outside it. I think I'd RMA it.

Help with camera placement (new install)

I'm no expert - just a couple of thoughts - if I was placing the garage camera (assuming a bullet camera) I would put it just to the left of the downspout (if facing garage door) pointing towards the driveway. I'm not familiar with the hikvisions, but for the cameras I've used you can only rely...

would you buy a refurbished harddrive?

@Razer - I've noted the "professional" series Samsungs are significantly higher priced than the non-pro versions. For example, on newegg a Samsung 840 PRO Series 256g SSD is $189, while a Samsung 840 EVO 250g is only $139 - besides 6gb difference, any insight into what is it that they're selling...

    Painting cameras ?

I kicked around the idea of painting my cameras to match the trim, but ultimately I settled for the stock black camera - no mods to color. The reasons were that (1) black doesn't look that bad against most trims anyway and (2) if it stands out just a bit that's probably a good thing. I can see...

+1 on skipping the hybrid - I've used them on two occasions in laptops that had issues with SSDs - they're better in the compatibility arena and the performance is better than a vanilla hard drive, but not nearly as good as an SSD.

would you buy a refurbished harddrive?

I have a 240g in my blue iris box ... plenty big for my needs. If you wanted to minimize cost then you could buy a 120g and use it as a boot drive (assuming win 7 ... not sure about win 8's storage reqmts), but these days you can pick up a 240+gb for around $100... best performance boost I've...

    BI Macros Question

Is There a Way To Set A Standard (default) eMail (alert, watchdog) For All Cameras?

As flexible as Blue Iris is, I'm sure there's a way to do this that I'm missing. It seems to me that courtesy of BI substitution variables there could be a single email template for alerts and watchdog. At this point I'm opting to have BI send emails, but I find myself configuring each...

Thanks for the response Don. I actually did RTFM (Read The F* Manual) before I posted. Regrettably that "OSD" crapage wasn't what I was looking for, but I have since figured it out. I use Blue Iris - in past versions BI would supply a default date/time overlay when a new camera was added...
