Just to be clear (and I think you are saying this), I prefer the 5442 with no HLC ... but the 54PRO with HLC=1. I.e. try comparing the T54PRO with HLC on/off ... and I assuming you are running the latest 10/28 firmware. Also, when doing comparisons, try to do as close as possible time-stamps...

I only had time for some very quick tests last night with an external IR illumintor, but comparing the "non-4" versions of those two cameras, I was a puzzled by the results (kinda along the lines of "defying conventional logic") ... so I need to do some more testing. So just letting you know...

Yea, I've mentioned that the T54PRO is definitely doing some shadow boost ... but seems to be "reasonable" and not WDR'ish look. Try doing snapshots with backlight=OFF versus HLC=1 ... notice any difference, especially when there is a lot of dynamic range present.

Let me know what you think about FW1028 - again, I like it. Sharpness=80 is a LOT ... but you have a Z4, so maybe more needed with that. I saw diminishing returns above 50 for daylight stuff. Also, I noticed that Iris=65 ... and with telephoto, you'd expect less depth-of-field ... so running...

I felt the 1028 firmware was a definitive improvement over 0827 ... so I'm real curious to see/hear your opinion @bigredfish

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

I'm saying for THIS SCENE at THIS LIGHT LEVEL, neither camera is capable of capturing non-blurry motion without adding more (color or IR) light. However, the T54PRO-ZE is able to capture a much better static color image than the 5442-S3 ... so I think(?) it has a better sensor/lens, but based...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Here's a comparison of the T54PRO-ZE versus the 5442-S3. Obviously color (although there's a LOT more of it from the T54) with no illuminators, 50msec shutter, iris 100, 3D & 2D NR at 50. The gain is at 65 on the T54 and it is 100 on the 5442. Clearly ridiculous parameters to try to capture any...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

One more picture - same params as above ... except shutter is now at 50msec ... so again, unless someone stands still, motion capture is going to SUCK at 1/20s ... plus it's a noisy image with a bunch of NR ... so motion is a blurry mess. I'm just showing you guys the light levels I'm dealing...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Now lets go back to Color (no illuminators) and in order to get "something", we are now at 20 msec shutter, 100 iris, and 65 gain. But without NR, we've got the "dark dancing pixel" party again, so we put 3D & 2D to 50. BTW, be VERY careful going above 65 for gain (which is already waayyy more...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Same parameters, but turned on the IR lights (both near & far) to 100. Also turned on the NR (50 for both 3D and 2D) because without that, it's "dancing dark pixel" party! ;-) BTW, I'm kinda impressed on the IR light since the middle of the driveway is 50' away ... so that other side of the...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

LOL @lookee with the Hollywood lighting ... totally the RIGHT answer ... but NOT an option. Here's an IR picture for 'ya ... parameters are now 10 msec shutter (was 5), 100 iris (was 50), and 50 gain (same as before). 0 NR ... so anything not totally black is super noisy.

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Of course middle of the day is not low-light. Here's a snapshot I just took with 5msec shutter, 50 iris, 50 gain, 0 NR. Yes, all you are seeing is the driveway lights and a few others ... THAT is low light! ;-) BTW, it's a clear sky with an almost full moon that is above the horizon, but...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

@bigredfish - If you have some specific settings you want me to do on the T54PRO and 5442-S3 (and tell me day and/or night), I'm happy to do it for 'ya. If you have a fairly wide-angle camera with most stuff at 50' (or more away) with everything being at least 20' away, why not run the iris...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

Having spent waayyy too much time looking at stuff, the T54PRO-ZE can deliver a much better static nighttime color image than the 5442-S3 ... but both do poorly with motion [ADDED TO CLARIFY] IN THIS SCENE since it is so dark ... and I have to use ridiculous parameters to get a decent exposure...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

I put the 5442-S3 back up ... so here's a comparison of it in the lower position versus the T54PRO-ZE which is on top. Basically identical settings - shutter=5msec, iris=100, gain=0, and NR=0/OFF. I do have HLC=1 on the T54PRO because otherwise it unnaturally pushes the blacks. BTW, the...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

A reminder that if you move the 3D & 2D NR levels to ZERO ... but still leave "3D NR" toggle on, NR is still being applied ... which took me by surprise - it's easily "seen" in a low-light scene by toggling it.

That's nice too ... but @lemand91 said "I have no desire to spend hours/days dialing in the right settings" so I wanted to just make a simple/easy request for them.

AutoExp unfortunately doesn't tell us much about what the camera is doing ... so if you were so motivated, I'm curious what manual shutter/iris/gain settings ... and if you set the 4K-X to the same, how would the relative brightness of that compare? WRT motion blur: Seems like a bit of an...

T54PRO-ZE Field-of-View (and change in aperture/exposure) as focal length changes

Yea, I think there was a regression with LED light behavior with 1028FW ... and Andy has a 1031FW (which is 10/15 from Dahua) which I think addresses this ... but pretty sure it doesn't include the image improvements ... which I like. LOL a bit confusing ... hopefully there is a roll-up release...

Would recommend you try the 1022 or 1028 (but not 1031) releases from @EMPIRETECANDY as there are some image processing tweaks I like. Fog is tough ... and in low-light, the processing algorithms are getting totally confused by it so yea, that's a big mess.

T54PRO-ZE Field-of-View (and change in aperture/exposure) as focal length changes

It's actually a slower fall-off that I thought it would be going into it ... so again, I'm not sure if there is some processing trickery that is interfering with my measurements. And yes, you can definitely get a brighter image at night "going wide" ... and in fact, since I'm OK with a...

Formula to set a varifocal T5442T-ZE to emulate other fixed lenses.

FYI that I did a similar measurement for the T54PRO-ZE (successor to the 5442) as seen below - see more details in that thread.

T54PRO-ZE Field-of-View (and change in aperture/exposure) as focal length changes

A while back, I read this post from @Perimeter ... so I setup a T54PRO-ZE 10' away from my garage along with some various "measurement props" and then took a dozen snapshots as I zoomed from 0 to the maximum of 2426 - recording the zoom/focus numbers. I then pulled those images into Photoshop...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

THIS is something I've wondered about. I.e. what matters it the SIZE of the pixels. So if one 1/2.8" sensor has 5MP and another (same size) 1/2.8" sensor has 2MP, then the pixel size of the 2MP sensor is BIGGER and (assuming similar technology/etc.), you'd expect the 2MP to do better (at least...
