    Setup for tech illiterate family?

A family member asked me to help with some cameras for their house. They're trying to stay under $1000 and I'm thinking we could start with 2 or 3 cameras for now. I personally run the EmpireTech T54s with Unifi Protect and AI Ports. I'm thinking of the same setup for them, if it doesn't go over...

Overview and LPR camera in the same location?

Sorry I think I misunderstood what you had asked me. I measured from the camera to the point in there street where the car would be (at an angle) and it's 40-50 feet. Angle out to the street from the camera is maybe 15-20.

Overview and LPR camera in the same location?

It's around 40-50 feet, but closer should still work. If straight is 0 degrees, it's pointing down at 7-9 degrees. The camera is about 10 feet up.

Overview and LPR camera in the same location?

It's not so much the cabling, I have two cables there actually. It was more how to mount/arrange the cameras so it doesn't look obtrusive.

Overview and LPR camera in the same location?

I have a 1 gang box on the inside column of my covered porch where I've mounted a turret style camera. It has a side view of my front door, the sidewalk and traffic passing by my house. While the camera can pick up some license plates, it struggles with fast moving vehicles or at night (even...

    Camera placement for new house

Thank you! Also don't worry about that tree, it's not going to be there in real life. I think I'll head out with my phone and a selfie stick to get a general idea of the angles and POV. Do you expect that I'd use all locations, or is the thought that I may be able to eliminate some?

    Camera placement for new house

I'm not sure I can swing a separate AC unit, but that closet backs up to a laundry room where I was planning to vent the hot air. Then I can pull cooler air from the room with the closet. The nice thing though is that part of the house has its own HVAC so I can hopefully take advantage of that...

There's a closet I'm planning to use for this purpose. Good call on the fiber! :)

    Camera placement for new house

Here's a pretty accurate render. I think we have until sometime in August to spec any network drops, so yes, I do have some time. I'm waiting to find out what options we have around conduit. Thanks again!

    Camera placement for new house

I understand about the doors and that's a really great example. I think I can get good coverage from the porch. I'm not too worried about the guest door. Oops, sorry. No it's not built yet. That was from the model to give you a visual. I could head out to the model with a test camera, but I...

    Camera placement for new house

Thank you both, I'm not sure if this is any better. I'm struggling to find good balance and it feels like I'm overdoing it? @mat200 Thanks for the call out on running 2x network cables to each location. For the cameras under the patio, porch and guest entrance, should those be mounted on the...

I'm guessing the yard along the left side of the house and the area behind the garage?

    Camera placement for new house

We're having a new house built and I'd love any feedback on camera placement before we have the wiring done. It's a typical suburban housing development with houses next to and across the street. There's a different community behind us (a gated mobile home "estate"). I've attached an image with...

    Why Ubiquiti/Unifi over Dahua?

Yeah, I mean that's a game changer. Aside from cameras, the Unifi NVR/Protect stuff is probably what I'm going to recommend for him. Thanks for confirming what I thought.

    Why Ubiquiti/Unifi over Dahua?

I'm helping a friend with cameras for his new house. I've always recommended Dahua, but was wondering if there's a reason to look at Unifi cameras? I feel that Dahua's are cheaper and have better if not comparable image quality (depending on the model), but wanted to see if there's something I'm...

Configuring alerts and logging of humans/vehicles

I've got a NVR8CH-AI with three IPC-T54IR-ZE-S3 monitoring a driveway and alley. I've setup an IVS tripwire for the driveway and am receiving alerts in DMSS. I don't want to be alerted on every car or person that passes by in the alley, but would like to be able to go back and review footage if...

    Camera placement and recommendations

Thanks again for all of the help! We ended up going with three cameras for now due to budget and installed things over the past few weeks. My father-in-law was a pipe fitter and he had a good time helping me run the ethernet cable. Much easier than pipes! (I'm standing on a ladder, the gate...

    Camera placement and recommendations

That's a great thread! I saw it the other day and it was really eye-opening. So if I understand, verifocal is helpful in dialing things in or having adjustment, but if I knew specifically I needed a zoom/FOV, I could go with a fixed?

    Camera placement and recommendations

Thank you, this is very helpful. I'll be testing positions with a T5442T-ZE, but need to talk to them about their goals for the front and sides of the house. While there are motion sensing lights in some places, I'm not sure if they want to convert those to always on so I'd be hesitant to go...

    Camera placement and recommendations

After reading through @wittaj's thread, I ended up ordering a T5442T-ZE from Andy's Amazon store. This way I can walk through positions with the family member and show them the options for the back area.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I didn't realize the difference between Amcrest and Dahua. That's good to know, because I have a Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-ZE that recently died and I've been looking to replace it. I'll spend some time looking at the options and report back.

Hopefully this is the right forum for this. A family member asked for some help choosing and installing cameras at their house after two incidents regarding someone going into the garage and backyard from the alley. I tried my best to create a diagram of the property and place cameras where I...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Thanks, I'll have to check those out! I'm not really sure what happened, but it's doing a lot better today. I did downgrade the firmware to 180726 yesterday, but didn't follow up on it. We did have a quick power outage this morning and since then the pings have been a lot more reasonable and...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Thank you. I'll see if I can try a repeater again this weekend. I hate to do that and I don't need another AP since coverage is great for every other device except the Door Bell. If not then maybe I'll look into the HSDB2, but would rather spend that money on an additional camera. So that's...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Mine shows -73dBm (45%). But the UniFi dashbaord is complaining about latency and retries. I'm on firmware version 180809 so I'm not sure if that's my issue. I have it constantly streaming to my Synology NAS and that seems to be when there is latency. If I stop the streaming/recording it seems...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

I'm using Ubiquiti APs and did a site survey and ended up trying both 1 and 11 which are the least used in my area. I live in a town home complex so there's a lot interface. I can give a repeater a try, but maybe I just need to try the HSDB2. Have you used both?

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

So I'm not sure if I just have a bad unit, but the latency on this thing is horrible; it frequently drops packets which is causing issues with my network and NVR. I know the reception on this isn't great, but my router is one floor up on the ceiling and I've tried adjusting channel and AP power...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

I've been trying to find a way to integrate this with Home Assistant so that I can have it detect doorbell rings. I came across the Zwave Nexia Doorbell Sensor. I did end up having to upgrade my transformer as the camera started rebooting (even after removing the sensor). I used the Hampton Bay...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Modem (Fios) -> Ubiquiti EdgeRouter -> Ubiquiti UniFi AP. I have an ethernet jack in a room closer to the DoorBell, so I'll probably just add something there.
