    AliExpress Dahua vs. Hikvision

Depending on your application, from what I've read (don't have one yet) the Dahua "Starlight" line is quite superior for low-light performance to any of the Hikvisions. Someone with more experience will likely contribute in a while.

    AliExpress Dahua vs. Hikvision

Can't help you with Control4, but I've been very happy with my Hiks (Am also planning a couple of Dahuas). There's been some debate about Chinese vs. U.S and updates, but I have 2 US, and 5 Chinese (not updateable without jumping through flaming hoops) Hikvision cams and I'm really not worried...

    Idiots with a fire extinguisher

I'f you're already trespassing at a pool, and gonna discharge a fire extinguisher, surely you would try using it as a propulsion system in the pool. Also, that girl, after she threw her flipflops over the fence I was thinking, now she's committed.

Tell us about your home automation!

So since my last post, we replaced our dining room blinds with some Hunter Douglas power blinds. Added the PowerView hub and was able to add some programming to my Automation controller to control them. Also added an Amazon Echo, and can now voice control almost everything the automation system...

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

I thought I'd update (actually I thought I DID update, maybe it was in another thread...) I now have 2 Top-201s in service at work, and 3 at home. I may have read this in another thread, lot of stress lately has my memory playing tricks... I found turning OFF direct to disk recording solves...

2 of my 3 POE cameras all fail at the same time.

The big question is, why were your cameras able to access the Internet? Other than user PCs, nothing on my home network is allowed outside of my network.

Is someone pointing a laser at my camera?

Yeah, I've recorded hours of similar spiderweb activity. I try to remember to sweep the camera when I let the dogs out before bed. That gives me about 4 hours before the little 8-legged *****s start spinning again.

    1am Car Door Checker

Wow thought you were my neighbor for a minute, but he never backs in, otherwise, looks like same driveway, and vehicle. I think most people would be amazed to see how often their vehicle doors get checked. I *still* need to get some of my cameras mounted in the driveway, not that we park outside...

What? Your camera can't differentiate between a Raccoon, and a cat? Junk! :)

    Plasti-dipping outdoor IP cams

Interesting that everyone wants black. I have several Top-201 cameras that I need to blend in to white trim, and have been thinking about spraying them white.

What dash cam are you using?

I have a several year old G1W that has been through hell. Hot car in the summer, cold Canadian winters, and has been dropped on concrete more than once. Still ticking. I had to re-attach the USB connector when it fell off after the first drop. I've had several other units for eval, including...

Not me but man watches his home burn live while evacing Fort McMurray wildfire

That would definitely suck to watch that on your own video camera. Another resident called their ISP and asked them to ping their modem to see if it would respond. Turns out it did.

Review - TOP-201 Super Mini 720P HD IP-Cam (The Cheapest IP Cam So Far !!)

Is anyone else having issues with the Top-201 and Blue Iris? My 201s consistently drop the first few seconds of video on motion events. https://www.ipcamtalk.com/showthread.php/10315-New-install-events-missing-1st-5-seconds

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

OK just finished some more testing. Back on the VM, replaced 2 of the 3 201s with Hikvision 2032 bullets. Same settings 720p 10fps iframes at 10. CPU is hovering around 16-22% The hiks perform flawlessly. Captured videos contain all motion, including the 30 pre-frames. Top-201 still drops the...

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

OK, THIS is weird. Wandering around the house tonight I thought I'd apply my same method of testing that I've been using on my new install at the office. Walk into the frame of a camera, hold up fingers count up from 1. All cameras behave as normal here at home, never miss motion, including...

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

Good question, but in the course of my testing, the 3 cameras have been on 2 different switches, and probably 5 different cables, several of which are known good (unplugged from working devices like ip phones, printers etc.)

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

Thanks for the input. I'm getting such mixed test results that I've barked up the wrong tree a few times. Last test has 2 of the new Top 201s on the same switch on the desl right beside each other. Settings are cloned between the 2 cameras, and sometimes they both get the full capture of the...

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

Some more testing and observations. I moved the Blue Iris install to another VM, and established Win7 64 VM, and same issues. Then I moved the installation to a physical workstation, i& with a boatload of RAM and SSD hard drive. Still behaving the same way. THEN, I added a third camera, another...

It's a VM so not likely an issue. Plus, it's doing direct to disk, so should technically we writing constantly.

    One little drip...

I fried one of my 2032s by leaving the cat connector unprotected in an unexpected rain/snow. Turns out it's just the POE that's toast. Camera works fine with 12V applied. Had a look inside, could not find any blown fuses or fried resistors, so leaving it as-is.

New install - events missing 1st 5 seconds

Yes, have tried object detection on and off. From what I can tell it's detecting motion fine, just dropping the first 5-7 seconds in the recorded file. Here's an example. I jump in front of the camera with 1 finger up, then add fingers counting 1 per second. The preview/thumbnail shows a...
