Most of us use our surveillance systems to protect our property, family, etc, not necessarily to 'protect' the footage. If you're looking to protect the footage you should look into some other methods of data protection & encryption as well as physical security for the vulnerable data storage...
Are you able to ping to an outside IP address from behind the router? It's often difficult to block outbound traffic - and that is what these cameras tend to do - they call home, establish a state, and bam you're compromised. This is why we totally prevent these devices from speaking or...
I ran HA on my BI machine for about 3 days - I was also running unifi controller on my BI machine. I was having issues with my HA container hearing events properly on my network. I bought another cheap PC on ebay and set up proxmox and now run HA & unifi on their own container/VM on their own...
This is exactly what I do as well - my primary BI server is on VPN and I use zero tier to access a secondary BI server at another location, I toggle zerotier on to access that location
For your ZeroTier question... as long as your BI PC is connected to ZeroTier it will remain connected even if you lock the PC. You can then access remotely via RDP. You will provide your login credentials when establishing the connection via RDP and will not see a 'login/lock' screen because...
I buy all of my switches at this link - these are retired HP ProCurve switches that have worked wonderfully for me for years. I currently have 4 of these in operation and have not had one fail. They do a great job and are affordable. They do have 2 fans so have a slight noise, so not sure if...
You can also use blue iris' geofencing feature to toggle different profiles which can, in turn, 'enable/disable' recording of cams etc without having to go through the gymnastics of using smart plugs. But I understand your desire to be able to fully disable the device
I've got internal cameras facing entryways and one PIR cam monitoring my stairwell - I have audio recording disabled on all interior cameras at the BI level but recorded at the SD card incase I need it
Hi there - were there any 'telling' differences before/after the break in occured? Maybe a piece of trash fell out of the car, etc etc. I find usually it's better to spend some time analyzing clear differences between pre and post event and using those identifiers to help narrow down the timeframe
Understood - you are worried about the security risks associated with new technology. It's actually ironic because most of us here are in a similar boat - we don't trust our cameras, don't trust port forwarding, etc etc. We find safe harbor in the configuration and control that we have over our...
When I'm looking for an event that wasn't triggered I search by 50% (go 50% between the time you know the package was there and when you know it was gone), then if it's gone at 50% go 50% further. Example:
0 Mins (Package is present)
10 Mins (No Package)
Check @ 5 Mins (Package is there)...
One other thing - I would suggest you start by getting everything running on the 'bench'.
Get your PC, Blue Iris, etc all playing nice with the camera before you hang it up - then once you have the hang of configuring etc you can put the camera in its ultimate location
Blue Iris does support 2 way talk, but it can be a bit tricky - if it were me I would start out with your proposed 4 basic cam setup and get everything running
Then in some time if you'd like to dip your toe in 2 way talk you can easily swap the existing cams with ones that support it (or even...
Yes most of us prefer pass throughs - it allows you to strip the wire to whatever length you find easiest to work with to straighten/organize the conductors. Then you slip the connector over the conductors (the small wires inside of the main CAT6 cable) and they pass through out of the front of...
A quick glance it all looks fine, you'll need a crimper (you can get a Klein brand they are good)
Can you share a link to the ethernet plugs? That's the only part I'm not sure of, I don't personally know what "with inserts" means but somebody else could also probably opine
If you want to go with stranded I would likely try this:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13404
You won't really find a solid copper patch cable as they are all stranded so that's probably your best bet
It's really hard to tell from the pictures or even RCA's site what this wire is made of. Based on the pictures I am going to say that it is -at best- a stranded copper cable, but potentially (and, likely, at the price) copper clad aluminum (CCA)...
Agreed, I actually recently renovated my second floor laundry room and was able to relocate my attic switch. I think a small closet is also a perfect spot
You can see I have a sealed pvc box where I run my cables into a shelf in my laundry room
Sounds good! I prefer to use the un-terminated wire while running so I can get through 1/4" holes instead of drilling 1/2" holes, and it's just a little easier to fish etc. But for your first cameras I think you'll be fine w/ pre-made and certainly will be one less thing for you to learn (for...
For runs from switch to camera I have been using this cable:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JAVNWOK
For runs between switches & to PC I use cat6 (solid copper NOT CCA)
I would personally feel comfortable with my switch even in a higher humidity setting, though I would definitely clog up each port with some dielectric grease just to prevent any corrosion and would monitor the switch periodically
It's got 2 40mm fans - 3 of the 4 switches i received are totally silent, one of them has a bit of a noisy fan that I could replace if needed but it's in the basement and doesn't bother me. The loads going through the switches are so small that I could likely remove the fans without any issue
Yes, I suppose the feasibility of a switch being in the attic will depend on your geographic location/climate. Humidity would be my main concern I think
Welcome aboard !
I've been using this switch for many years - they are cheap, reliable, and enterprise quality
https://www.ebay.com/itm/314053763196
I currently have 3 in my house (one in the basement w/ my surveillance server, one on my first floor, and one in my attic) all daisy chained...
Is your BI server set up as a static LAN IP? Perhaps when the power went out your internal IP's got reshuffled (if you haven't set up static) and you're actually forwarding the port to a different device? Just a thought
Yeah I have found this solution for sure and it does work - with the inconvenience of layering in settings etc of a 'second' camera :) Was mainly looking for some native support for this feature and seeing if there was other interest
Hi there -
I've been searching for this feature for some time now and I know there's some other ways to accomplish, but essentially I'm looking to mask the images that are sent to CodeProject.AI or Deepstack to eliminate certain areas of the image that may contain unwanted subjects. For...
