Does anyone know the domains I'd need to whitelist for P2P to work? I'd like to block everything else from the NVR.

    EmpireTech NVR - Hard Reset

For those who are interested, there is a tiny reset button for these NVRs on the motherboard that you have to hold for 30 seconds while turning on the device. This will execute a hard reset. Thanks to Andy for giving me that information.

    EmpireTech NVR - Hard Reset

Nevermind. After a couple of hours trying HDMI cable, etc., I was able to connect from my PC locally to the PoE port on the NVR and log in. That was an adventure. Note to anyone...BE CAREFUL enabling that firewall feature with MAC addresses. I probably should've used my IP address but I'm...

    EmpireTech NVR - Hard Reset

Anyone know if there's a way? I enabled the Firewall in the NVR to only allow my home PC's MAC address to access it, and it won't let me in :( I have proof the MAC address is correct, but c'est la vie

DMSS setup with NVR; connection failed

I read the whole thing. That was a very helpful, meaty thread on the topic. Based on the back and forth, I'm thinking the least evil option is P2P on the NVR while on a separate VLAN. I hate opening ports that could be exploited whereas at least P2P has some "layer of defense" being Dahua's...

DMSS setup with NVR; connection failed

It appears you're right. I either go down the P2P route and get the full functionality, or I poke open a few holes to allow the notifications to flow out. As much as I don't like saying this, perhaps P2P is the way to go but ONLY if I segment off my NVR. I'd then need to allow access from my...

DMSS setup with NVR; connection failed

Notifications? I'm not sure. The video works just fine as long as it's on the network. Edit: Ok, I'm reading the thread you posted. Very helpful, thank you. Still analyzing options...

DMSS setup with NVR; connection failed

Piggybacking on this thread. I have my IVR tripwires set up and it's generating alarm logs, but I cannot get those notifications to the DMSS app for some reason. In DMSS, I'm able to see the camera footage just fine, but no notifications. Within DMSS, I've checked the boxes under Device...

EmpireTech Camera Installation - A Few Lessons Learned / Tips

You're more precise than I am :). I bought a range of bits as part of a set, measured the hole size I needed and just bored all the way through. Cutting fluid made a big difference because man, the process gets cranky as you near the end. Good work gloves and safety glasses are a must.

EmpireTech Camera Installation - A Few Lessons Learned / Tips

I don't want to repeat a bunch of stuff that's already posted on the Wiki, so I'll try to keep it to lessons I learned specific to my experience in the hope of helping others. 1. For soffit installation, I highly recommend using the 1/16" aluminum sheets off Amazon (link below); they're plenty...

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

Agreed about Omada. It’s way better than consumer grade stuff but it’s not Cisco either. Luckily host firewalls can do what I did, which I believe to be a fairly good mitigation, and everyone with Windows has a host firewall. I’m open to further suggestions.

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

I’m actually using ESET host firewall to do it all. It blocks and allows down to the application level and alerts whatever you want. It’s slick. Windows Defender firewall will do similar I believe but doesn’t have the monitoring detail that ESET does. Agreed the plugin is irritating.

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

So, here is what network action WebSocketServer.exe is producing on my PC while I'm using the plugin to browse the NVR's UI: .100 is my PC and .102 is my NVR Looks like it's not calling out, but that doesn't mean it can't be triggered to do that at some point. I just added two host firewall...

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

I have ESET Premium and it has a feature that shows what IPs each node on my LAN is reaching out to. When I’m home, I’ll give it a try and we’ll see where this socket is sending me. I also have new Omada networking equipment that must have a way to track that, but I’m still figuring it all out.

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

I would love that. Any advice on how to do that? Block the port and protocols it reaches out to from my PC? It spawns WebSocketServer.exe as a process.

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

The vm idea is good. I'll try that and I'll isolate it on a separate VLAN with the NVR. I'll be curious if this plugin needs Internet access because it does have a web socket executable per the malware analysis report.

Security Analysis of Dahua/EmpireTech NVR Web Plugin

My NVR is in a closet so I can’t VGA or HDMI. I was hoping to have access to the NVR UI all the time to see what events happened during the night. Isn’t SmartPSS a Dahua app I’d have to install which means I’d have the same risk?

When I bought into the EmpireTech/Dahua NVR and camera system, I knew I would have to isolate the devices and I'd be protected from security threat. However, I didn't realize that I would need the NVR's web plugin running on my PC's browser. I can't isolate my main PC and I don't want to buy a...

    WebSocketServer.exe?

I deleted the folder before figuring out how to "remove" the plugins, so there's still showing there as disabled but without the ability to "remove". So, that's probably fine. Do you get this message when going to the camera UI?

    WebSocketServer.exe?

Ah ok, I found it I think. I disabled both of them but it doesn't let me "delete" them, only disable. Is that the case for you?
