Recent Rise in Theft – Are Dahua Cameras Reliable Enough?

Lately, there has been an increase in small theft incidents in my area, especially during late night hours. I’m planning to install a proper CCTV system and have been looking into Dahua cameras since they seem widely used.

From what I understand, features like night vision, motion detection, and remote access are essential, but I’m not sure which models actually perform well in real conditions. There are so many options available that it gets confusing to decide what’s actually worth the investment.

I recently came across a few Dahua camera options while researching online and noticed that different models are designed for different use cases like shops, homes, and outdoor areas. Still trying to understand which one would be the most reliable in terms of long-term performance.

Has anyone here used Dahua systems recently? Especially for small business or home security setups, I’d appreciate some real-world feedback before finalizing anything.

Never heard of them.........

Thought I'll update regarding the mystery Dahua name.
Just got my takeaway tonight from the Chinese restaurant. I spoke to the guy that served me about Dahua. Apparently it is a Chinese/Indian deliciously as I thought, with a newly introduced (about 2 years ago, I was told) reolink sauce. Apparently the sauce is a desired taste and to much may give you motion sickness and blurred vision. Sounds lovely, I'll take a risk. I might try it myself next weekend.
Another problem and mystery solved. I'll sleep well tonight.

Dahua's pretty solid for what you're describing. Been using a WizSense setup at my place for over a year now. The human/vehicle detection is genuinely good, barely any false alerts from cats or passing headlights.

For late-night theft concerns, I'd lean toward the TiOC series if budget allows, it has a built-in siren and flashing lights that actually scare people off before anything happens, not just record it. If you're on a tighter budget, 6MP WizSense is the sweet spot. Don't bother going straight to 8MP unless you specifically need to read plates from a long distance.

The series naming confused me too at first. This breakdown helped me make sense of it all. The Complete Dahua Security Camera Guide

Can you show an example of a Dahua 4K/8 MP camera reading plates “at a long distance”?

Thanks

Sorry, I'm currently using a 6MP Dahua camera at the moment. An 8MP should definitely give you better resolution. You can give it a quick search online, you maybe find heaps of examples...

Oh, ok. Thanks

And maybe we can't because they dont exist.

No fixed lens wide angle 8MP camera will read plates at a distance, especially at night.

But if you claim you are getting it with your 6MP, albeit maybe a little fuzzy, please show us.

Focal length for the distance beats MP digital zoom.

Show me a non-PTZ 8MP that can read plates at 150 feet.

We have a whole thread demonstrating the importance of focal length over MP. As of right now, there are no cost-effective 8MP varifocal cameras on the 1/1.2" sensor. Any 8MP varifocal you find under $300 will be on a sensor sized for 2MP and will be poor at night.

Digital zoom only works in movies. Sure you may get by with a little, but not a lot, and certainly not what we see on TV.

I don't need to search online for 8MP examples, as we have plenty here.

Here is an example from long time member @Parley - this is a fixed lens 4mm 8MP camera on the ideal 1/1.2" sensor.

Can you read any plates in this image of parked cars? That black truck on the right is what maybe 100 feet away?

No chance at the jeep across the street at what maybe 175 feet

With digital zoom you can kinda make out that street sign.

Meanwhile here is my 2MP camera OPTICALLY zoomed for 150 feet capturing a U-HAUL in motion. I think most will say that is a clearly readable plate.

Great advice. I've been trying to read a number plate over the road, which is over 200 feet away. I'll get the 8MP straight away. Cheers.

Are Dahua cameras reliable enough? Depends on whether you're looking to purchase some of the 2025/2026 dog-:poop: artificial stupidity models or some of the really old stuff that actually works.

Fair point. I see the light now. Those shots really drive home the importance of focal length over resolution. Still learning the ropes here:)thanks for the reality check before I (or anyone else) spent money on the wrong gear!

Plus most of us wouldn't recommend 6MP as they don't make one on an ideal MP/sensor ratio. If you care about night performance it has to be in the green:

I still don't understand why sensor size is given as 1 divided by an inch instead of the diagonal, or even better yet, the total area of the sensor.
