Where Best to Mount Camera?

In trying to have my T54 aid with identification, I'd like to mount the camera about 7-8ft high.

As shown in the picture, I have an exterior light fixture that would be close to where I'd want to mount the camera.

Where would you reccomend mounting the camera to avoid the light being in the field of view of the camera?

Thanks!

I would mount it under the soffit 100%

Its certainly not as good as lower, but its an easy mounting spot that means it won't get wet, and won't need to drill through the brick, and will look better from the outside

IMHO, that trumps the better spot lower down

Welcome @spectac,

I would try the following position, and consider using a Wall Mount for a Turret camera,

Should be able to route the cat5e cable around the edge of the garage door if you do this carefully instead of drilling a hole ( which can be a pain there as we do not know what sort of support we would need to drill through.

The Soffit seems too high to me if you want an ID image of those next to the car parking area.

REMEMBER setup a test right first and test at various times of the day .. do let us know how your tests work out.
( search for test rig here )

This is what a wall mount looks like, note there is at least 2 different sizes of the metal version ( recommended, .. there could also be a plastic version )

Thanks. I do have the wall mount already

Thanks. So where do you see the cable actually making entrance to the interior?

Soffit is entirely too high for face id's.
7-8' is ideal.
What wall mount did you purchase?
Drilling through the mortar is ideal and not at all difficult if using the correct masonry bit.
I drill through the mortar, then use a electricians 2' drill bit to finish from the mortar into the garage.

Heres mine.

So actually mount it to sidewall of the garage door opening? The white part?

Yes, plenty of people have put it there and match it with one on the other side of the garage (especially if you have cars parked on driveway overnight) will ensure better coverage.

Most people will not even notice it there, especially with the black design feature on the door already, it will blend in.

I would only mount it under the soffit if you were looking for OBSERVE quality or used a varifocal to aim at a pinch point further down the driveway to "flatten the angle"

But based on where that car is at, a fixed lens at that height will get you good image of the hoodie of a door checker.

If you mount the cam to the right of the light say a 16", then if you properly aim the camera across the driveway, the light shouldn't bother it.
But as someone else mentioned, Test and Verify.
Use a 2x4x8', a 5 gal bucket, rocks or sand as ballast, and you have portable test rig.

Another question...where would you mount a small IR illuminator in relation to your camera mount suggestion? Also assuming I add a camera by the other garage door sort of looking back towards the first camera.

Thoughts on where a small IR illuminator should go in reference to my picture? I'll have a camera by the other garage door as well.
