New member here. I've been lurking for a few weeks. Finally getting ready to design, wire, then buy equipment for a surveillance camera system. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by profession. And have done all aspects of home construction/repair. And I'm very comfortable with wiring Electrical Cable Phone & LAN. Semi-retired, and living on a small Lake in western Washington.

In a previous home, back in 2017, I installed a "Costco special" camera system. Night Owl 8-camera DVR system with 5Mp 1080p fixed lens cameras. Most of you can immediately see the problems that type of system would have. The positives of experiencing that system is that I got to learn first-hand it's short comings. But it didn't give me much insight as to how to fix those problems with better design and hardware/software. That's why I'm here. Just reading thru the "Cliff Notes" wiki page here is incredible!

I've got a ton of questions to ask. But out of respect for the old timers here that get asked the same dumb questions over and over, I hope to read enough to get an overall approach to my new system. Then I'll post a general approach I'm thinking. and ask a few specific questions. Is there a specific forum location where I should make that post?

Welcome @Aces_WA

We should have a ton of appropriate posts to answer questions you have here, and @wittaj as often posted great intro links.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting a few Dahua OEM 4MP 1/1.8" cameras models so, before the prices go up. See the thread @EMPIRETECANDY posted on price increases happening more or less tomorrow

computer memory prices have gotten crazy and everything using ram is going up in price.

If you want to jump before thinking .. as you have had a camera system before, this is what I would do if you can afford it now

N = number of cameras you think you want.

Order N+1 or N+2 PoE cameras from Andy asap. I would get at least 2 varifocal 4MP 1/1.8" cameras, and the rest fixed 3.6mm .. if you can afford more, then get more varifocal models.

NVR .. if planning to get an NVR, get the best 16 port / channel model you can afford. ( other option is running Blue Iris on a PC .. so if you have a decent PC, just get a nice PoE switch )

Normally I like to take more time to figure it out before I buy, however with price increases coming around imho good to jump on recommended cameras sooner than later.

Since you're planning a full build, just post your floor plan and gear list in the main sub with a "System Design" flair; the blokes here love tearing into (and optimising) a good wiring map. Just a heads-up: skip the 4K-on-a-tiny-sensor traps and look into cameras with decent low-light sensors, otherwise you'll just have high-res footage of blurry ghosts again.
