Money & Economics

Who'd think silicon would be so valuable ..

Not worried about EU, they don't have the money nor the recourses, they will always be behind the game.

curious, have you heard of a company called ASML ??

basically ASML is THE ONE AND only here .. the entire world is dependent on them .. Apple, Nvidia, Intel, AMD ..

100% market share on EUV machines and 90% on DUV machines

super critical, China is doing everything they can to get that tech ..

My only thought is, good for them, but they only make the machines, not the chips. Without Chip designers/makers they would not have a customer base. I understand if an EU company wants to become the next Nvidia/Intel/AMD company, but just don't see that happening anytime soon.

Guess we will see in time where this goes...

Thanks for the education of this industry, I am clueless...

But without ASML, would the chip sellers have a customer base, and the chip designers a job?
True but that goes with any company. So EU is going to create their own Data Centers for cloud services and not depend on AWS and other US cloud services? Good for them, lol Good timing for them to do it since prices sky high right now, haha
This is what I was originally commenting on.

EU .. I don't think they planned to divorce their partner. The point is that the USA and EU are very interconnected and if you don't need a divorce you really shouldn't get one as there will be a lot of pain with the separation

This is why the EU parliament stating they are is pretty much pointless. Even if they create their own cloud based data centers, guessing for AI, they will be so far behind in collecting data, unless they steal it, they won't make a dent in the world. Google had AI in plan all the while collecting our search history for over a decade. We helped build the AI Beast by freely giving away our privacy in our online searches. Even if EU builds their own local cloud based storage systems like AWS, this is no threat to the US, IMO. Nothing to be worried about.

It is easy to say what they stated but to have the Huge amount of money to do it is a whole different thing. AWS is dominant because of the huge about of money they put in those centers they created. I have been in a few Data Centers back in my day, though the ones I went in were for ISPs and companies offsite local cloud storages...you are escorted through them for security purposes in which your equipment is in a locked cage/fenced area. Cameras are everywhere in those Centers. The Centers, Never loss power, just think of the very high cost power backup systems they have. Guessing huge diesel generators. Funny, but we still had UPS backup in our Racks though :D It was a standard for all their Racks to have Managed Switched PDUs

Heck I am so out of it, when did Eaton purchase Tripp-Lite? haha.

yup, massive huge diesel back up generators are typical on those data centers .. in a way these are massive like the Government Run Warehouses in Indiana Jones where they put the Ark

Yes, Europe in general behind in the AI race, yet ... recall the USSR was behind in the nuclear bomb and missile race - and now we constantly see statements of how we should give in to Putin so he can get his way.

The main race on the AI front now is certainly USA vs China, and honestly China has a number of leg ups on the USA on that one.
1) Power, China produces more power than USA
2) STEM, China produces more STEM majors vs USA
3) Research, China produces more STEM research than USA
4) no worries about those pesky IP laws .. USA AI companies are getting sued by all sort who seem to care about their property ( intellectual ) .. China really doesn't care what pirate bay / swamp it gets info from.

USA is attempting to shackle China's rise .. we'll see how well it does.

China, in many ways the USA has allowed it to gain to much power, and we'll see if it can stop China from dominating ( China still is weak in many areas, and is very dependent on it's exports for funds )

Add Trust factors to China's AI, heck us and EU don't even trust their cameras, kinda doubt their AI will go far beyond their borders. There is a race for AI dominance all over the world now...time will tell...

AI is like Bitcoin to me, I don't really understand either of them...

AI can mean many things .. simply enough just think of it as cutting edge computer logic.

What we are seeing now is based on massive super computer level compute and massive data analysis thanks to many very bright STEM majors / PhDs / researchers.

LLM - large language models is what seems to be intelligent, but honestly is just pattern matching and predicting text ( or images, or music, or speech for the related AI products ).

It seems real when you attempt to discuss topics with ChatGPT or the like, yet the truth is currently the products are not intelligent, nor do they really remember or actually know what they are stating.

imho they are VERY useful for those who have enough knowledge to know when they start to hallucinate and give garbage errors, and on the flip side super dangerous for those who trust it too much.

We are entering a new a challenging world when the fake can be produced quickly and easily, faster than we can review it.

Those who master this AI tech will be on top of the new world coming. Those who do not, will effectively become pawns.

Something I don't understand, aren't the corporations and their leaders who are building the large data centers generally the same ones who are freaking out over global warming, while they are significantly contributing to it?

That's because "global warming" is about getting rich for a few and redistribution of wealth at a global scale.
