I have two computers at two locations (one is far away from me) running Blue Iris for a couple years, and both computers have become unresponsive/unreachable several times, and they coincide with windows updates. All times require a force shutdown with power button. Both computers are properly set up to wake on Lan and never go to sleep.

The remote desktop became unreachable and unwakeable last week, I had to get someone go by and physically restart it. Today the local desktop became unresponsive, and I had to physically force restart it. When computer restarted I noticed it installed an update.

I was wondering if having Blue Iris open is preventing the computer from restarting when it goes to do the updates?

Do any of you have Blue Iris running on a remote computer and have any advice on how to configure windows so it stays up?
 
Turn off Windows updates!

If you aren't actively using the computer for anything but BI, it is not a security risk, at least not any more than an NVR that is never updated.
 
I had originally turned off the auto updates on both of these computers, but that caused problems being able to connect into them when they went without the update (im guessing firewall didnt like it).
 
I have not heard of anyone having that problem, including me. It must have been something else.
 
Might have been just a coincidence, but since we are all probably using different types and brands of firewalls - who knows. I am pretty sure when it happened before, I looked and my firewall blocking access to an unupdated desktop can happen. I guess I can turn updates off again and see how that goes.
 
Which firewall are you using? I guess I could see one getting aggressive on not updated devices, but that could kill access to lots of things like phones and tablets not able to be updated to latest editions?
 
So its....specific to windows machine and I mean, being able to connect INTO the machine from outside the network. So inbound traffic to the unupdated machine. It also wouldnt allow remote viewing through the web UI.
