Empirecandy IPC-T5442T-ZE + Ubiquiti and AI

You can still repurpose that HDD in a Dahua NVR. For security, it’s best practice to block internet access for both the cameras and the NVR, which already minimizes risk. Even better would be to place them on their own VLAN for an extra layer of isolation.

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

From what I’ve seen, AI detection via the AI Port doesn’t currently recognize license plates unless it first identifies a car object. For true ALPR, the Axis Q1700-LE is considered the gold standard. If you go with that camera, I’d strongly recommend pairing it with an NVR that fully supports...

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

Personally, I wouldn’t invest in expensive Axis cameras just to pair them with UniFi and an AI Port. You’ll get better detection performance by running them on an Axis NVR, which is designed to take full advantage of their capabilities. What range do you need for license plate capture? If it’s...

Empirecandy IPC-T5442T-ZE + Ubiquiti and AI

UniFi Protect doesn’t currently process ONVIF events. It only supports continuous recording. That means if you want AI detections on your IPC-T5442T-ZE streams within Protect, you’d need three UniFi AI Ports (at $199 each) to handle all six cameras. If your goal is a seamless experience with...

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

Yeah, I’m aware that I could set up an ONVIF stream profile on the Axis camera with a max bitrate of 8 Mbps. But honestly, that kind of defeats the purpose of investing in a high-end camera like the P1468-LE. I want the camera to be able to use the full range of its encoding capabilities and...

Ubiquiti releases Protect Generation 6 Cameras - G6 Bullet, G6 Turret, G6 Instant

I've spent a week testing the AI Port extensively. While it works fairly well, the overall solution is still quite buggy. One downside is that it transcodes video streams, which reduces picture quality. So, if you're using Unifi Protect software, there’s not much benefit to using Dahua cameras...

    Lets Revisit Ubiquiti Cameras

While it’s nice to see the cameras side by side, I think there are a few issues that make it harder to judge their real performance. Showing three video streams at once doesn’t really let you see any details—zooming in on key areas like faces would have made it easier to spot things like...

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

I've been in ongoing communication with Ubiquiti support over the past week, and it turns out that the AI Port only supports a maximum bitrate of 8 Mbps. It also transcodes the incoming video stream into a different format for the outgoing stream. This means that the high-quality video from my...

    Where are the 2025 Models?

What kind of improvements are you expecting from the newer Q35 domes that would justify an upgrade?

    Where are the 2025 Models?

    Unfortunately I don’t have side-by-side comparisons.

    Where are the 2025 Models?

Haha, no worries! I agree—the 5849 would be a more fair comparison, though it lacks IR, and unfortunately I don’t have one to test. It’s pitch black here at night, so IR is a must for my setup.

    Where are the 2025 Models?

The 5842 model has a 1/1.8" sensor as I mentioned in my post.

    Where are the 2025 Models?

I have the Dahua 5442-S2 (4MP on a 1/1.8" sensor), the Dahua 5842-S3 (8MP on 1/1.8"), and the Axis P1468-LE (8MP on a 1/1.2"). The 5442 and the Axis perform similarly at night, thanks to their ideal balance between resolution and sensor size. That said, the Axis delivers noticeably better image...

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

License plate recognition has actually worked really well for me with Dutch plates. I reached out to Ubiquiti because I find it hard to believe that the AI Port only supports an 8 Mbps output stream—it seems more like a bug to me. Unfortunately, their support hasn’t been very helpful so far. I...

    Unifi AI Port- Works great!

It also seems that the AI Port itself can’t process a stream at 20 to 30 Mbps. I hadn’t noticed it at first, but after reviewing some of the recordings, I realized that many of them have brief skips—usually missing about a second of video. I compared them to recordings made at the same time by...
